I'm shocked at how many people consider walk on's as "can't miss"

It's depressing for sure. Not much better that everyone fawns over the Chimes.

I can see Chimes. Chimes has that feeling you expect when you ask a college town for it's can't miss spots. It's got history, a good menu for someone from out of town, and the atmosphere and building doesn't have a cheesy/packaged feel to it.

Even though Walk On's is local, and it started on Nicholson, it's relatively new, and it's being molded into a franchisable restaurant so everything feels that way from the logo, to the menu, the decor, and waitress outfits... it just feels too corporate. Not what I think of when I would go to a college town and ask for their can't miss spots.

Traditions:
seeing the band march down the hill

tailgating (or at least tailgate hopping)

Experiences:
Walk through downtown and maybe visit the old and new state capital (especially if you have kids). If not, go bar hopping downtown on 3rd Street.

If you can still pass for college age, hit up Bogies

If you want to feel more cultured while drinking, head to the Cove. It sports one of the largest bottle beer selections in the country as well as one of the greatest collections of whiskey, bourbon, absinthe, and really any kind of alcohol imaginable.

Walking or bike riding around the LSU Lakes.

Eats:
Louie's: perfect greasy spoon breakfast diner on the north side of campus

The Chimes: best bar/restaurant combo in BR. You can attempt to do the "Around the World" Challenge and drink beers from, well, you get the gyst. Try the blackened alligator appetizer and eat some duck and andouie gumbo. There's also a music venue next door at The Varsity.

Barcadia: This is a great place to go to release your inner child or if you have kids. It's a bar/restaurant/arcade right next door to the Chimes with some of the best burgers one can eat. It's more family friendly during the day (although this will be it's first football season so no telling what it will be like on gameday) and becomes more like a bar after the dinner crowd.

Top 5 would be:
5. Downtown
4. LSU Lakes
3. The Chimes
2. tailgating
1. see the band come down the hill

1) LSU campus/stadium/traditions
2) Some of the restaurants are pretty good, but Lafayette and New Orleans are both better, so it is not a preferred food destination.

Nothing else is special in BR

Here's what we do Saturday- game day

1. Eat at The Pastime, look at my dad's pictures
2. Walk around the quad/ student union area enjoying the tailgating scene. (Usually hang out in the L club for an hour or so)
3. Visit Mike and beg him to get in his cage
4. Watch the team and band go down the hill.
5. Get in the stadium in time for "Calling Baton Rouge"

Those are our 5 can't miss things

Once you get past Mike and LSU football, the list for BR becomes surprisingly weak.
What else is there that is a bona fide " can't miss"?

i hate to even bring this one up. but in my observations, it's the clean truth.

just about the top thing on everyone's bucket list from
other schools when going to see a game in Baton Rouge, is to take a side trip to New Orleans.

Plantation tour in St Francisville
Shopping at Whole Foods area on corporate where it's nice
Tour the castle looking state capital and check out the tallest state capital
Visit casino on the Mississippi River.
Breakfast at Louie's
Acme oyster house - people line up for hours for French quarter location. The one is Baton Rouge is nicer and better.
Walk LSU lakes
Best tailgating in the planet. Start at Indian mounds and end by the catered RV's. Visitors are usually invited in.
Base the entire trip around being inside the stadium in-time for the pregame song.
