It hadn't hurt that 30 Tiger players attended a 3½-hour board meeting to testify on his behalf. "We wanted to keep it in the family," says senior guard Eric Andolsek. Added Williams, "Coach Arnsparger leaving was like my dad dying. But with Coach Archer, it's like my mother took over."

When Archer took the LSU head coaching job, he was 34 years old, the youngest head coach in Division I-A football. Archer was chosen over a number of interviewed candidates, which reportedly included Steve Spurrier, Mike Shanahan, and Mack Brown. Arnsparger later hired Spurrier at head football coach at Florida.

I always liked Archer ... he just wasn't ready to be a head coach.

People forget that "keeping it in the family" often has a stink of incest about it.

And in the last 22 years, apparently nobody else has thought he was either.

I never even hear the guy's name mentioned for openings.

The alumni BBQ went smoothly thereafter though, and you can't underestimate the importance of that.

We'll sell out alumni games, the real games not so much.

When the players pick the coach it often doesn't work out.

Some people realize their not cut out for being Head Coach. He was a good DB coach and is doing a good job with NC State as DC. I've spoken with him a few times since he's been at State and I don't think he has any interest in being a HC.

I remember he took his firing extremely hard. Could be he doesn't want to risk going thru that whole pressure cooker again.

I'm old and my memory is failing me, but who was the head coach at LSU that didn't even know that he lost his job, until a reporter from WBRZ (Ithink) asked him about being let go?

I think you're mistakenly thinking of Jerry Stovall. He knew good and darned well that he was being fired that morning, so he didn't go to the Board of Supervisors meeting where it happened but went jogging instead. WBRZ found him and told him the news, but it wasn't a surprise to anyone with a pulse in Louisiana.

Exactly. They are basing their opinion on the fact they like the guy. Its like if your friend is up for a job. No matter what you know about the other candidates, because your friend is a candidate you will support him to get it.. because he is your friend.

Seems like that's what happened to Archer.

Bob Brodhead was an outsider that was hired as AD with the direct order to fire Jerry Stovall. They used Bottom Line Bob to prevent getting the blood of an LSU legend on their hands.
