I watched the game again this morning just to see if there was anything I missed that may be worrisome or a positive.

A few thoughts:

The offense ran less than 10 plays total. A lot of jet sweeps and runs off tackle. When we passed, it was a basic route tree, just different parts of the field.

What this tells me is that Canada and O came in with a plan to not show their hand too early in the season and just focus on execution. It's impressive to see a team with 40+ minutes of possession time not dig deep into the play book. Outside of the deep ball to Chark, there were very few vertical pass plays and very few screens. I have to give O a lot of credit for that. He knew to keep his foot on the pedal, but not too the floor.

Defense was dominant as always. What was most impressive to me were the down lineman. BYU's oline was no slouch. That was big arse dudes. Our Dline held gaps as good as you can on runs and put pressure right up the gut on just about every pass play. This group is better than last years. I came away extremely impressed with the young DBs. For their first game starting, they were pretty damn close to being impossible to throw on.

All in all, I came away impressed and think the improvement between this week and next is going to be pretty significant. This team has a lot of potential. We'll see just how good they can be when we see State in a few weeks.

Geaux Tigers!

Exactly. It's important to note that not only has the media not had access to practice, but our spring game was cut short due to lightening. So teams really don't have film on what Canada will do here, why show our hand week 1?

Lacoutoure, Gilmore, and Lawrence this year are so much better than Neal, younger Gilmore, and Godchaux. No doubt about that. The way the 3 of them can clog lanes is gonna be nice to watch this year.

The BYU center is supposed to be legit and Gilmore had his way with him last night.

I think they would have run more different plays if they had needed to, but they were smart enough to figure out that they did NOT need to. And once we got up 17-0, there was no need to run tempo...it was then time to bleed clock and secure victory. I thought the game was well managed from that aspect.

I watched the game again and when Ed Alexander came in at nose guard he pushed the center back into the backfield better than Gilmore did. Gilmore wasnt bad by any means though. I just think once Ed can get in better shape he should get more snaps.

What is this thing you are doing? Stating facts, logical diagnosis and an undertone of optimism? We will not have this on the TRant, my good man! You apparently are a troll of a different breed!

True, but to Etling's credit he threw a couple of nice out patterns, a nice long one on a play action to Chark. He also dodged pressure and rolled left, then threw a pass with touch.

He also DID NOT shuttle pass to Guice when it wasn't there and tossed one out of the end zone. Both good decisions.

So, he threw all the passes well and made good decisions when not to throw.

I'm confused.

Gilmore is a lot better at shedding blocks and pass rushing though.

Overall, the defense is very sound. It's the most sound I've seen of an LSU defense in an opener. Every gap was filled, pass coverage was excellent, tackling was excellent, etc. Aranda and the defensive staff has been working their asses off.

I'm still cautiously optimistic about the CEO era at LSU, but last night made me feel better for sure. I think a lot of people have been shitting on CEO since his Ole Piss days, and I'm just thinking he may very well have the last laugh and do something really special at LSU.

I don't think these things are mutually exclusive and honestly it was probably some of both. Working out the first game kinks is great and to have that end result is awesome. If we can beat a quality opponent with that dominant of a performance and not have to break out too many new plays then I'm happy with that.

The team will only get better as the season goes on.

Not saying I disagree but how long do you hide a playbook?

What do we do next year?

Is the advantage of other teams not having film more valuable than practicing your plays in live action?
