Wasn't Miles' specialty O-Line?

Why the hell has our OL been blown up repeatedly? Is the injury bug that bad, or was he really only good at recruiting?

Recruiting, not coaching, was his forte.

Les didn't lose that game Saturday.

our recruiting has been hit or miss, we lacked coaching up players for years, and we had huge gaping positions where we just missed. It appears just looking at rankings isn't telling the whole story. 5 star backs, wrs and Dbs but whiffing on top oline men or missing on tackles completely.

He was a lineman, but I don't think it was his specialty. Never saw where he claimed it was.
Not necessarily laying it at Miles' feet, but we didn't have the OL to win that game. And haven't had in the past. When I saw Boutte literally get knocked backwards on his arse I knew we were in trouble.

While recruiting ranks were good we did not recruit well at QB or OL. How many O linemen from LSU are in the NFL that Miles recruited? You have to recruit nationally at those positions and we didn't .

He played ol not sure if it's his specialty.

I see your point...I would just like to make a point.
Since "O" has taken over the program we've seen former players invited back to be a part of the goings on. So, I have to wonder, did Miles not chose Kevin Mawae to be our offensive line coach because he was a former player?...just wondering.
Our o-line was bigger...now I know their d-line is extremely talented, but I would think that with proper technique we should have performed much better. This could very well be the answer to our o-line woes.
There was an opportunity to have a potential first round ballet hall-of-fame NFL lineman as our o-line coach and Miles passed.

imo, Miles seemed to recruit for the "rankings". I could have simply been he signed who he could and the state of Louisiana produces a lot of atletes; DB's, WR's, RB's, etc. also, without question, our staff has not been stellar in coaching pass blocking techniques. i'm no expert but when a bama DL guy can simply push Boutee back on his arse at the snap count and blow up the play it's a tell tell sign that we are not coached well. when you add that our guys have "slow feet", esp the tackles, it shows that we have failed at recruiting the most important position on the offense. add our QB issues and you get what we saw Saturday night.

We don't have many true tackles or centers on the roster. Pocic should be a T but is at center because he's our best option for calling out assignments and whatnot. teuhuma and Malone are both guards that are playing where they are out of necessity
Also, we missed on some good offensive recruits because they didn't want to play in Miles system. How many offensive lineman have we developed into top draft picks in recent years? Not a lot

Les wasn't there physically but his fingerprints were still all over that offense, that is undeniable.

Wait, I thought it was all about the play calling.
So many of our fans are, simply put, a bunch of whining douchebags.

Les is at fault for everything, academic woes, state debt, OL, QB, DB, he is at fault for LF not being able to average 3.5 against Bama..... ALL his fault......

Yes - 30 years ago.
At this point, I think it's pretty obvious that there's a difference between playing a position and coaching that position. Or, for that matter, being a head coach that used to play (and coach) a position in the past.
It's been said ad nauseum, but Les' ideas on offensive schemes are very old-school and don't work against modern, quality opponents.
For example: who in their right minds thinks that any NFL defense from the 70's could hope to stop Brees and the Saints offense from putting 500+ yards on them in the air? Conversely, does anyone think that the San Diego offense with Fouts and company - one of the MOST prolific offenses ever seen in that era - could put anywhere near the points or yards up on a modern defense like recent Denver, Carolina or Pittsburgh teams from the last 5-10 years?
I'm not trying to denigrate any of those pre-Y2K teams. They were great for the period they were in. They were innovative, efficient and made the best use of the talent pool available at the time.
But none of them would have very much success against the schemes and athletes of modern football.
THAT is why Les' O-Line background is meaningless. Or, worse than meaningless, he let it become a liability.
Like another person said - Guards as tackles, tackles at center, slow feet and poor technique. And most importantly, a completely insane desire to force-feed dual-threat quarterbacks into a 70's era pro-set offensive scheme.
Just my two pennies worth, but unfortunately I think it's going to take a while to correct that issue. Keeping Aranda is absolutely paramount because that defensive performance his side put on against the Gumps was Oscar-worthy. And it's probably the only thing that will keep us in games until the next coach finds a way to revamp the offense (and get the right players to run it).

agreed, it seemed we recruited high but when we dig deep either players didn't fit our system or we got top heavy at certain positions which LA is extremely strong with.
This was a major failure on miles part, example the qb. we run prostyle he wants a qb that can run. So he recruits kids that hang out in shotgun all day and then puts them under center and its a disaster. Our oline went with the strategy of anyone can play any position so we end up guard heavy. It helps negate injuries but it fricks you on tackles.
