Most of the rant has grown up with Jim as "the voice of the Tigers". Some of us older folks remember John Ferguson. I doubt Jim was "nudged out".He was never as good as John in my opinion, but he was our guy and we figured out what was happening. Sometimes it took us a bit more time than with John. Jim had a great career.

I'm interested to know if anyone on the rant is old enough to have listened to the announcer before John.

J.C. Politz? :raises hand:

Kind of a trick question, since J.C. was around BR radio for years after "the call" of Cannon's run, but he was calling S.U. instead.

Here's another trick question: who called LSU on Baton Rouge radio before Jim Hawthorne -- and I mean the big three sports -- and is still on the air?

The only thing I ever heard by J. C. Politz was the run by Billy Cannon, but what a great call it was. I was just four at the time, so John Ferguson is the first one I actually remember listening to on the radio.

I was able to listen to all three , I liked Ferguson more.

I will take Hawthorne. Ferguson was always behind the play.

No he wasn't forced out. Wait until you get near retirement age and you will understand much better. There comes a point that you are ready to move on to another stage of life. Hopefully you have the wisdom to know when that time comes. From my own perspective, I am looking forward to retiring from my day job in another 41 months and doing some other things in life.

Kudos to him for his service to LSU and for being able to move on to the next phase of his life on his terms.
