did a cursory search on the Rein article from today so if i missed it...SIAP

read the sportsnola article, but the tweet from valleyshook got me to thinking about some of the 'what if' moments in LSU sports history...i was probably viewing this moreso toward football, becasue of the story). i don't know if this is the biggest, but it's certainly near the top...i would think. thoughts?

Pod Katt @valleyshook [quote]Bo Rein remains probably the biggest "What If?" moment in LSU Sports history. His death altered the path of the Ath. Dept. for decades

nice rearview mirror write-up on Rein (sportsnola):

quote:

There was so much hope and anticipation from the purple and gold faithful upon Rein's arrival. He was a fiercely motivated individual. Sound familiar?

quote:

Bo Rein was a man Woody Hayes greatly admired. Hayes gave his eulogy.

quote:

Rein followed Lou Holtz to North Carolina State in 1972 after serving under Holtz at William and Mary. Holtz eventually moved onto to Arkansas where Rein served as the offensive coordinator for one season (1975) before heading back to Raleigh for the head coaching position at North Carolina State. At the time, he was the youngest football head coach in the NCAA at age 31 .

I'm not an expert in LSU history. But IMO, yes, what else could it have been?

...other than the circumstances surrounding the 2011 season of course.

My top 3 LSU "what if" moments are:

1. What if Bo Rein survived

2. Getting home state players to play at LSU in the 90s ( like Dunn, Minor, Wayne, Reed etc.)

3. The mystery behind the 2011 BCS game

yeah, the 2011 season is gotta be up there...i'd probably put had Brodhead not been fired on the list too.

A lot of older LSU fans do still harbor this great 'what if' about him, but this fact (and knowing what sort of philosophy he had at NC State -- basically Woody Hayes, old Big 10 style football) tells me, he may have been Les Miles on crack offensively. I don't know that his offensive style would have been suited to what the SEC became in the 1980s. Whether he would have adjusted to the times, is the interesting question, I suppose.

He was a great hire, and for a while a great AD. However, by the time he was fired, he was sort of going off the deep end.

The problem was in, who was hired to replace him.

All the ones mentioned above are good--now if we want to add basketball to this, how about this question: the year that Rudy Macklin was injured & had to be red-shirted, could the Tigers have won the national championship had he been healthy all season? It seemed like they had outstanding players at every position except Rudy's spot and lots of depth.

Also, perhaps some other Rant poster can remember the specific year I am talking about.

i had to let that sink in...

all good points though. i don't know what kind of offense he ran at NC St., or what he carried over from being under Holtz, but you make valid points.

Yeah... you would think/hope LSU would not have had to suffer through the Archer fall and the Hallman mediocrity.

What if LSU beat FSU in 1979 so Bowden would be inspired to become LSU's head coach?

What if Steve Spurrier or Mike Shanahan was selected for head coach over Mike Archer?

i remember those days well; i actually had a life insurance contract on the pilot of the turner const plane. it was, and still is to an extent, a shocker what happened. i know LSU granted his children a scholarship but i do not know if they actually attended. and it impacted LSU football a lot. our native son jerry stovall picked up the pieces but he just didn't really have it as a HC; he was a fine man and an LSU hero but sadly it just didn't work out. i'm not sure i agree with the premise that it affected LSU for decades tho. the football program recovered with the hire of bill arnsbarger but when he left is when the football program shot itself in the foot by hiring on the cheap with archer and hallman. i think one of the factors was our long time AD, Maddox, was a cash only, overly frugal AD. he was a man of integrity and garnered much respect nation wide it's just he never would go for the gold on HC's and it seemed to create a culture that only bob broadhead rose above. of couse, broadhead clashed with the authority at LSU and we ended up with joe dean. i think joe dean was th problem. so, in short, i think LSU's football problems were not solely caused by the death of bo rein but more so by the hires of AD's and HC's. things have changed now and i think the powers that be at LSU understand you get what you pay for.

That was 78-79. Magic beat Bird in the NCAA championship so no.

And Bo Rein is easily the biggest what if in LSU history. He was anointed America's next great college coach. I was 12 when the mysterious plane crash occurred and I still remember the rumors that went around, especially after Stovall was selected.

Stovall was dietzels first choice so the story went. The powers that be made it clear to dietzel that a head coach from another school had to be the choice. Jerry had never been a head coach but had been groomed by coach dietzel supposedly. Rein hired, ten the crash, then Stovall hired. Baton Rouge was a small town then really and people talked openly about heir suspicions.

Many thought rein would build what Saban finally did 20 years later

Stovall took the HC job, but w/Rein's asst coaches right? i thought i read that before. seems like that would have to be the case, due to the accident happening in Jan.

What if Dante Culpepper goes to the Saints and Drew Brees joins Saban in Miami?

I agree about Rein.

Yes for one season. Some may have stayed past that but they all had contracts for one year and LSU wasn't gonna pay two staffs in reality

What if DeWayne "Astronaut" Scales had stayed for his senior year - the 1980-81 LSU team that went to the Final Four. Talk about a NC.

I think the 79-80 season. It was Dwayne Scales last year, I remember thinking LSU would have been almost unstoppable with those two at the forward positions.
