I don't know a lot about baseball. I watch it from time to time for my kids. I also watch toward seasons end during SEC tourney or NCAA tourney play. I also watch the occasional SEC game. I love overachievers and guys who beat the odds. I am surprised that Tyler Hanover is able to compete at the level he does being 5'6" tall. I know he may not be major league material, but I am very impressed. It shocks me he even plays at LSU. From those of you that know baseball what are 4 or 5 of his physical or mental attributes (really quick hands, strong wrists, quickness, etc.) that allow him to be successful. I would love to hear what you guys think.

I don't think height has much to do with at all especially in baseball. I would think to be successful at any sport no matter your size is to have great hand/eye coordination. Having great fundamentals since you can't make up for it with natural athletic ability. In baseball also, you need to put your "legs" into it to make strong throws. He is good because he is fundamentally sound and works very hard. He wants it a little more then others so that can overcome him being short.

Bill Veeck requested an official ruling on whether Yankees shortstop and reigning MVP Phil Rizzuto was a short ballplayer or a tall midget.

Height isn't much of a big deal in baseball. Mike Fontenot is short too. Speed, quick hands and a good eye at the plate are the best attributes. You don't have to be gorilla-sized to hit a baseball far.

Dude's got a MOTOR... watch him play 2B, he's always in the right place. Always backing up his teammates... Quick hands and the plate, great bat speed!!

I wouldn't exactly say Tyler Hanover has "beaten the odds" in terms of making it to LSU. He was a second team All-American in high school and was Gatorade player of the year in North Carolina. Go look at his high school stats. It shouldn't come as of a shock he found his way to a premier college baseball program.

He's got wheels and a great glove. Rarely is he out of position on 2b. He's also a very good contact hitter (he hits for average as opposed to for HRs) and his speed helps out his base running. He's the kind of guy who can stretch a double into a triple.

Baseball is about fundamentals. If your small and you are fundamentally sound, it will makeup for your lack of size/strength.

I read an article on him a while back (couldn't find the link), but they interviewed his hs coach who said something to the effect of he works harder than any other athlete he's ever coached. his work ethic combined with the amount of heart he puts into the game makes him really good and a lot of fun to watch.

Height means nothing in baseball. While it is hard for him to go up and get a ball that a 6'4 guy could get, he makes up for it in speed, quickness, vision an release. His release on the ball is faster than anyone on the team. Maybe because his arm doesn't have to travel as far. His strike zone is also much smaller due to his size.

I would qualify all of this by saying that height does matter in pitching. That's like saying that height matters in basketball -- there are exceptions -- but tall pitchers with long arms create problems for batters because the ball comes at the plate at more of an angle instead of straight on.

That means that the batter has more difficulty in seeing the ball come out of the pitcher's hand (especially when the pitcher throws sidearm and/or when the batter hits from the same side that the pitcher throws. The increased angle also makes it more difficult to see movement on the ball, giving the batter less time to react to breaking balls.

Great feet, better arm than you would expect from a guy his size and a compact swing that can produce decent power. And a little chip on his shoulder about showing a little guy can play at that level, something I know about.
