Frank Wickes was a University of Florida man when they hired him. He did just fine. LSU doesn't need somebody who bleeds purple and gold to get the band back where it was. Whoever is hired will soon find out that LSU is a dream job for a band director.

Can we just turn this into a Roy King funny picture thread?

Sure I may have been a little dramatic by stating that Tiger Band may go away, but my point is that the people who are ultimately in charge see it as a nuisance. The athletic department does not want the band to have any more than a secondary or tertiary role in its public image.

There is no way in hell that LSU would ever do away with Tiger Band. That said, we could use some new blood to re-energize TGBFTL. If LSU does decide to can Roy King, they should go after Auburn's band director. He's an LSU alum and has done wonders over there. Auburn's band is now one of the best in the SEC. They remind me of the way Tiger Band used to be.

Roy King seems like a very good and diligent man.

But the fact is, TGBFTL has become what marching band professionals call a "park and play" band.

If I am objective and speaking with my head and not my heart, I have to say that TGBFTL is now a couple notches below a band like Ohio State's "Best Damn Band in the Land."

And we should not settle for that.

Well, that's an understatement.

You have NO CLUE. The TAF commits a tremendous amount of funding for Tiger Band.

Yup. And starting around 2010, when all the budget cuts started, one of the first things to go was the band stipends. TAF immediately took up the slack saying that they wanted to preserve everything about the band.

Meaning that the band members are paid directly by TAF. They also cover all travel and stay costs.

Ohio State's band is overrated....so is Texas A&M's. Alabama's band is big and loud, but they're not very good. Same can be said about Florida's band. Auburn, Georgia, and Tennessee probably have the best marching bands in the SEC. Where Tiger Band used to excel, and still does to a great extent, is in the crowd involvement department. We just need to tighten up the marching and come up with some more entertaining halftime shows. One Latin show a season is more than enough. I also wouldn't cry if we mothballed the Tower of Power, Chicago, and Earth, Wind and Fire shows for a while. You can tell that Roy and company are running low on ideas when just about every show consists of a recycled number and a march off to "Hey Fightin' Tigers."

My favorite was the always stirring rendition of Eleanor Rigby.

Seriously does anyone ever really enjoy a half time show? I have seen many different bands perform at half time and they never are really that interesting. Rice is creative in a half arse way and is humorous but I could easily miss.

They're big, but not louder than TGBFTL. They don't cut anyone, so their balance is way off.

With about 100 more members than TGBFTL, they only have around 40 trumpets, as compared to our 70ish.

The current Dean and his predecessor, as well as the current Director of Bands and his predecessor all had ill feelings towards Tiger Band . Applied faculty and tenured professors have had many of the same attitudes. This is nothing new; it's been going on for years. It stems from a desire for power and control of $$$$. Roy has worked tirelessly with the athletic department and donors to uphold the TRADITIONS that have made the Tiger Band world famous. I know Roy personally and believe me, he has the best interests of LSU at heart. Another thing. The mere "talk" of Academic Exigency has been enough to dissuade some students from my state from more seriously considering LSU. LSU has always been a weird combination of excellence and financial mismanagement. Hopefully this situation works out best for LSU and those who really have a history and love for TGBFTL. I was there for 5 years, not once did I ever think that.

You were in TigerBand, right?? Not talking about a high school, here.
