But as an analyst by trade it's pretty appalling that someone can say one data point drastically shifts a trend.
like the later rounds of the basketball tourney, omaha is the gold standard. for a program of lsu's stature to not win a game there over 5 years, that should raise some eyebrows. 10 other programs have managed to do significantly better and that should not be the case for any team at the forefront of the sport.

and yes, making it this season would be a drastic change because it would be twice in 3 years as opposed to once in 5. and of course, the situation is fluid. the analysis starts all over again next season.

some people are acting like athletic directors don't have these very same conversations with coaches every season. they talk about it over and over in press conferences and coaches get fired for these sorts of results. it's one of the most common dynamics in sports. solich and donnan got fired for averaging 9 wins. regardless of what happened after that, it proves my point that teams that consider themselves elite make changes when the results are mediocre.

Like duke and coach k when they went 5 years without advancing past the sweet 16

Bo Ryan went 8 years

You're ignoring all other accomplishments. Just like LSU, those programs were in good shape and in good hands

I'm pretty certain you don't know what "significantly" or "drastic" mean.

So let me get this straight if they have been once in 5 years then go to Omaha this year that would be twice in three years and not twice in 5 years as well?

The funny thing is... We've gone twice in six years right now. If we go back this year... We'll still have gone just twice in 6 years.

3 times in 7 years right now. If we go this year but not next year, that'll only be TWICE in 7 years!

All you need to know is that 5 years > any other time frame...

Unless we go to Omaha this year. Then who the frick knows.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with your point at all. First you are using a "5 year trend" that fits your agenda although Paul Manieri has been the coach at LSU for 9 years. So why not look at all 9 of the years? You are right that LSU is one of only a few baseball programs that makes a profit off of the program and has some of the best facilities in the country, but that does not always directly correlate with the team that is fielded. LSU has set attendance records even during years that the baseball team is down, which leads to the baseball team turning a profit. Looking at Paul Manieri while at LSU he has been to Omaha 3 out of 8 attempts and the team may get there again this year making it 4 out of 9. That is great and we all want the team to succeed and ultimately get to Omaha but that is not the best way to judge a successful, stable program. Nobody wins it all every year and it's obviously tougher than you think to make it to Omaha. Things have to go correctly with the pitching staff, you need timely hitting, some luck is involved, and errors can kill a run. In the last 7 years LSU has been a top 8 national seed 5 times. That is soon to be 6 times in 8 years. How is that for a good trend? I think your opinion that a program isnt successful if they don't win in Omaha is a little tough and childish. We won't ever see 5 national championships in 10 years again like we had with Skip. With that in mind how can you be upset with a coach that has brought the program a national championship and puts us in the best possible position to make it to Omaha year in and year out. We will be hosting for the 4th straight year this year in the NCAA tourney. I'm willing to bet that this team makes it to Omaha. Hopefully when we get there this year the team doesn't go through a hitting slump like they did in 2013, that way we don't have to listen to your retarded argument that CPM doesn't produce at a high enough rate.

It's all about perspective, we keep hearing arguments that we're not at an elite level and aren't getting the results we should be, but never whose results we should strive for. UNC? Only program with more appearances in Omaha since Mainieri has been here, but no national championships to show for it. South Carolina? 2 championships and 3 CWS appearances in the last 5 tournaments (his favorite measurement), but declining under Holbrook and in danger of missing the tournament this year. Personally, I wouldn't trade results with anyone. We're in better shape than made out to be, especially if we get back to Omaha this year.

so you think it's unreasonable to expect the premier baseball program in america to win more than zero games in omaha in a 5 year period. that's ridiculous. that emoticon shows you mean business!

Exactly. Hell, most of us in this thread are still annoyed by last year's blown regional.

That doesn't mean we're just going to ignore all the good PM has done for the program or worry about the health of the program.

We're obviously in great shape
