What are yalls thoughts on this? If he's a starter he will only pitch 2-3 innings per outing which puts someone in extended relief duty. On the other hand, he comes in for the 9th throwing 94 from the left side, that will come in useful in a one run game.

Would probably work, but I'm more thrilled to have another starter.

If he's not ready to do extended innings like a starter this season, I wouldn't mind having him as a bullpen guy for multiple games. I just really think he could be a starter if healthy.

I like it, but how much rest does he need between appearances at this point? CPM will throw a guy like Newman or Bugg on back to back days. Not sure he is ready or willing to do that with Latz.

He has yet to come out of the bull pen this season. My guess is that he has to take longer to warm up out of caution for the arm. I doubt he comes out of the pen during this post season.

Not as our closer, but he should be in the bullpen.

Maybe in a spot closer role. I don't know that he has the stamina to be a true closer and pitch multiple times over a few days, even of only an inning or so each.

That would be the only catch, could he close one game and come back two days later and close again.

I just feel a starter that only pitches 2-3 innings could get the bullpen in a bind.

I'm thinking we still want to carefully schedule his work, not have him come out of the pen on short notice.

Are we not happy with Hunter Newman as the closer?

This. Newman has earned the closer role. Why change if it's working. I like Latz. Watched him live at sec tourny. Had a confidence about him. I like maybe a situational matchup type guy and maybe pitch game 1 of regional. That may be a stretch but maybe. Rather pitch Valek game 1 though.

He's not ready to be up and down like a reliever
He needs to start a game and go as long as the staff feels comfortable, to eat up some innings in regional.

That was a planned inning. He was not asked to come in at a moments notice.

regardless, he came out of the pen which is a completely different warmup routine and psychological state than starting the ballgame. You could argue nearly every bullpen appearance for every player is a planned inning. You were wrong.
