If it wasn't for Ty Ross's awesome defense I think I'd rather see Moore in the lineup at catcher. Ross just cannot hit the ball this year at all! Also, I wish CPM would stop DHing Chinea. At least for SEC play. Midweek game? Fine. I think we should consistently use Moore here or give Foster a try so we can get some type of production out of this spot in the lineup! Plus, they have more experience.

The first priority for catcher is defense. A bad defensive catcher who can hit is called a first baseman.

a catcher's defense is inversely proportional to his hitting ability......or so it seems

People dont understand that a catcher controls the entire defense and pitching. He has to watch every baserunner, block pitches in the dirt, call the cut off throws, help set the pace for the pitcher, and know batters weakness and strengths.

Majority of catchers are not the greatest hitters but what they do behind the plate is far more important!

A catchers hitting ability is a plus...not a priority. We were spoiled with Gibbs

Chinea rips the cover all the ball and can handle the bat pretty well. His first out last night was the hardest hit ball I've seen all year. The kid will be good.

Wow! Did someone not see the Northwestern game. Kid kept how many runners from getting into scoring position, in a tight game....???

Ok. What's your point? One game doesn't prove anything. Apparently Mainieri agrees with me as he's still giving the kid ABs and starting him at DH on Friday night SEC games.

Yea, Ty Ross is no good, that's why he'll be drafted my MLB in June. As for Chinea, the kid hits the ball hard unfortunately right at people so far. I watched him in the fall and spring practice. He'll do just fine.

Ha I love all the criticism! So y'all too! But I agree that Ross's defense waaay out weighs his inability to hit the ball so far this year. Just was stating if it wasn't for that then he would be dispensable cuz he can't hit to save his life this year. And Chinea is 2-21 so I'm guessing all those other 19 he hit to the warning track right? GTFO! Inexperience and inability to hit thus far should result in Moore and Foster getting more reps in this spot! Chinea can be used in midweek games or at the end of games when the game is in hand to gain more experience and improve!

I've always felt you don't need a great hitting catcher if he plays great defense. I know this probably isnt the fairest example (college player vs pro), but Brad Ausmus & Mike Matheny were great catchers in their years, known for their defense instead of their offense.

Actually Chinea is 4-21...and yes..the other 17 were warning track bombs

Ross did have one our hits last night. He smoked a ball against NSU that should have been a game winner had it not been for the wind. His hitting was bad early on, but he is making more contact and seems to be coming around. Same can be said for JaCoby. Moore had plenty of chances early on and he still gets the chances when facing a right handed pitcher.

Makes sense. Why ya think Foster isn't getting more reps? Seems like he has put some good swings on the ball when he has had the chance.

You defintely cant take Ross out of the lineup. I've never seen anyone gun down baserunners at this level like he does.

Chinea will probably be our catcher next year, and needs to get at bats this years.
That said, I'd like to see Moore at the plate more often, as we are short on left handed power and he is one of maybe two?
