Decided to look up Wisconsin's recruiting rankings for shits and giggles. Granted, recruiting rankings (especially individual players) aren't everything and can be shitty at times, nevertheless here is what their starting 11 looked like coming out of High School. (according to Rivals)

CB Sojourn Shelton
3 star, 46 at position, unranked nationally

CB Derrick Tindal
2 star, unranked at position, unranked nationally

S D’Cota Dixon
3 star, unranked at position, unranked nationally

S Leo Musso
2 star, unranked at position, unranked nationally

LB TJ Edwards
3 star, unranked at position, unranked nationally

LB TJ Watt
3 star (tight end), unranked at position, unranked nationally

LB Vince Biegel
4 star, 3 at position, 73 nationally

LB Jack Cichy
No stars, no rankings

DE Chikwe Obasih
4 star, 13 at position, unranked nationally

DT Arthur Goldberg
3 star, unranked at position, unranked nationally

DE Conor Sheehy
3 star, 26 at position, unranked nationally

Basically, despite having 7 of their starting 11 on defense unranked at their position coming out of High School, including 3 of their 4 linebackers, they still led the nation in scoring defense, finished 2nd in total defense, 4th in rushing, and 7th in passing. Hell, that LB with no stars did this in their bowl game.

Just for comparison’s sake, all 11 of LSU’s starting defenders were in the top 22 at their position, 6 were in the top 10, and 9 were in the top 250 nationally.

Stuff like this makes it hard for me to temper expectations.

to be fair ...

Wisconsin played a TERRIBLE schedule. I don't say that lightly.. I mean truly terrible. The Big10 was a dumpster fire on offense this season. These are Big10 teams Wisconsin played.. they also played Miami(OH) 17.9 ppg, Troy 27.9 ppg, Hawaii 17.6 ppg, Alabama, Southern Cal.

Minnesota - 22.5 ppg
Northwestern - 19.5 ppg
Illinois - 22.7 ppg
Maryland - 24.7 ppg
Purdue - 25.1 ppg
Rutgers - 27.1 ppg
Iowa - 30.9 ppg

I would go as far as saying that it's probably the weakest offensive schedule in modern football history

Not to dampen the expectations, because I think Aranda will do a great job, but his defense wasn't playing against 4 and 5 star offensive guys every week either.

You can't post this and just ignore the fact that he coached in the big 10 and didn't have to play Michigan or Ohio state and gave up 35 to alabama. He is a great hire but let's be a little realistic he didn't exactly play great offenses last year.

They did play Alabama OOC and beat USC in a bowl game though

And got their shite pushed in vs bama. Usc is a shell of its former self. Plus USC did score the second highest points against them as well.

Aranda

He did a hell of a job coaching mediocre talent against mediocre competition.

This word is overused but what Aranda has done statistically with his defenses at every stop have been amazing, I'd like to see a sta that shows each years total defensive rankings, then those within 5 spots of his defenses and those teams defensive recruiting rankings to see exactly how far above his weight class Arandas been punching. I really believe that Arandas going to put the SEC in catch up mode for a while trying to adjust to what he's doing with his new talent level on D

They got physically dominated by a MUCH more talented team.

I'm not shying away from anything. He used average at best talent to face average at best competition and it resulted in statistically the best defense in college football.

And gained 151 yards less than what they averaged

So, out of curiosity, how did Aranda's defense to vs similar opponents compared to OSU and Michigan?

As they should when the talent differential is that great

But they didn't do that much worse than us

We gave up 30 points. They gave up 35

We gave up 434 yards. They gave up 502

Given the difference in talent between LSU and Wisconsin defensive rosters, I'd say he's probably a better coach than Steele at least

He will have a plethora of talent at his disposal. Hope he dominates, but let's remember he was coaching in the big 10 not a very good conference.

Well I'm not sure gump sept offense was anything near the nov version LSU faced.
I just hope transition is made without too many gap and cover busts.
