I'm not sure people understand the significance of what we viewed Saturday. Yes, people will say it's BYU, and I get that...but we made a mid-major look like a high school team defensively. BYU was severely outmatched at every position.

We're going to set records this year. This defense is going to better than the 2011 defense. Here's why.

Depth - This is the #1 reason in my opinion. Rashard Lawrence looked dominant. Greedy is an extremely skilled corner, and fast - he was lockstep with the receiver on that interception. Ed Paris looks like the 5* we recruited. He displayed a honey badger-esqe swagger. Kary Vincent looked great. Delpit played fast. Farrell, Thornton, Chaisson, Taylor - the list goes on...and these are mostly TRUE FRESHMEN!

Just imagine the rotation we will have this year. We will never be in a situation where we are tired late in games. We have extraordinary talent on our 1st and 2nd string. That is going to pay huge dividends in SEC play.

Coaching - This goes without saying, but Aranda is an outstanding coach. I truly believe he is the next Head Coach of LSU - and he is going to be someone who has Nick Saban type success in College Football. He is young, extremely smart, and clearly has a deep understanding of the ins and outs of playing defense. It's incredible how disciplined he has our group playing already, especially true freshmen in their first college football game! They looked comfortable out there - as if they had 2 seasons under their belts.

Front 7 - People want to focus on the secondary, and I get that - we're DBU! But, the staple to all of our best defenses in the past have been our DL and Linebackers. This year is no exception. With Key back - and Lawrence, Gilmore, LaCourture, Herron are all going to have monster years up front. Remember - Ed O is a defensive line coach converted Head Coach. He is going to get the most out of these guys, if anything. I also think Devin White is going to have a monster year - along with Alexander once healthy. Chaisson and Taylor will be special and play a huge role in our success this year too.

----------------------

It seems like a focal point of our discussions has been around the offense - and yes, I am ALSO excited to see improvements there, which we will. But, our offense will not get us to the playoff this year - our defense will. I expect the offense to get better each week, just like 2011. They will do enough so that we keep winning. Guice is an incredible talent.

But....keep in mind this is Canada's first year. It's going to take time for the offense to develop chemistry in this new system. There will be growing pains. There will be huge challenges for them once we enter SEC play, especially against teams like Bama.

But....no matter the struggle for our offense - I fully expect our defense to carry us through those challenges and help us win games. You are going to see them put points on the booard for us as well - which is a huge momentum and confidence boost for our offense.

I am confident that when is all said and done, we will have had the best defense this year in College Football.

I agree with all of this except for the offense. Orgeron, Canada, and this offensive staff will not take average offense for an answer. What we saw Staurday doesn't represent what we will see this season, not even close IMO.

Except for a few penalties and RZ play-calling the offense gelled just as well as the defense did. Will Etling blow teams away with his play, no but as a team I think they will. I don't think this teams offense will be anything like 2011. The QBs we had here then were very indecisive, Etling wasn't Saturday. He got the ball out quick, on time, and with more lower body technique, which we didn't see last year. That will be the difference this year. I agree that we may struggle against Bama but who won't?

Our OL will have to play a great game in that one, along with Etling to win. I think this offense could be more compared to Bama in 2011. This teams going to get better across the board each week. The offense will complement the defense and vise versa.

ST didn't show anything special either but I know they have some new things they will bring out at some point this season. All in all I think this team can be much better than 2011 in all phases of the game.

Great analysis!

Although, I don't agree that this defense will be as good as the 2011 version..................but I also don't think they have to be THAT good. They are a special group though. Geaux Tigers!
