A third former NFL assistant coach has joined LSU’s staff. Jerry Sullivan, a longtime receivers coach at the professional level, is serving as a consultant for the Tigers, the school confirmed on Tuesday. Sullivan, 73, is working with LSU receivers coach Mickey Joseph in an off-the-field role, team spokesman Michael Bonnette said.

I like this hire. It might not seem huge but it will be very beneficial for the guys that haven't played many snaps at the college level

Not trying to be a dick- but isn't the point of a shadow staff to have recruiting advantages?

No, the shadow staff is for developing players during practice. They can't recruit at all other than identifying potential prospects.

The game day coaches do all of the actual recruiting.

Joseph was hired primarily bc he can recruit New Orleans high schools.

This hire is to help assist him in the actual coaching and developing of players at an elite school.

Consultants can't do any recruiting or actual on the field coaching or lead meetings away from the playing field. What our consultants can do is watch a lot of film and find tendencies on our own team and our opponent's team. That's why Bama has so many consultants, for scouting purposes. Maybe CEO can lure in the old Patriots video team so we can know all the play calls on offense too.

He really does hire some elderly guys

Carrol and Bill B and Saban are 65 and I'd take them in their 70s

All good though. Experience!

I'm not gonna lie. I fear Pete is going to have a coronary at practice. I'm ecstatic he's with us, but he does not look like the picture of health.

There's some evidence that their consultants are much more involved than that. From Mike Locksley seen on the sidelines with Hurts last year, to Sarkisian in the booth with a headset and play sheet. And more than one O-linemen mentioned how awesome it was getting "coached" by Joe Pendry. In fact, there's a good chance they hired Pendry as a consultant but he coached the kids during the week, and the OL coach Brent Key basically recruits full time.

Hopefully we are pushing the boundaries as well, and if Sullivan happens to accidentally find his way to the Ponderosa or the sidelines on game day, so be it
