Lack of Leadership Dooms LSU Men's Basketball Once Again
A lack of leadership, both on the court and on the bench.
With this pattern of blowing leads and collapsing down the stretch easily recognizable, where was the player or coach to take this team by the throat and holler "No! It's not happening again!"
For those of you yammering: "It's not the coach's fault!" ... We all know that Johnny Jones doesn't take shots or make free throws.
However, coaches set the culture on a team. How mentally tough a team is depends on the coach. This is taught, by example, by practice, and by lectures.
It's more the repetition than the absolute awfulness of those nightmare last 10 minutes that demonstrates this team has a serious gameday coaching problem.
And forgive me if I'm not totally stoked about "this team is young and we have a great future!"
Some of you folks need to get through your heads that times have changed. This team, if it is talented, will ALWAYS be young from here on out.
Simmons and probably others will be here one year, just enough to showcase their talents before moving on to NBA millions. They are almost mercenaries--there is no more love for the dear ole War Skule.
Do I like that this is the way it is in 2015 and forward? No, but I have to accept it.
And that means, coaching--both gameday and building a program culture--is that much more important.

John Brady had full control over his teams and was run off for being too "hard" on the players and now Johnny Jones is not hard enough on his players.
These coaches that come in here are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Did he mention that this team has improved every year under Jones?
Seriously some of you fools lack perspective.

In other words, all of he players have JJ's dumb look on their faces. Huh?

Just because Trent Johnson set the bar so low doesn't mean the fan base can't be frustrated with the players repeating the same mistakes.

No article from the Reveille has every said anything best.
This reads as armchair psychology.
And to say this team has no heart is pretty shameful. How can a reporter who presumably was in the locker room last night to see the emotions on display even think to say that?
Columnist for the college newspaper knows what it takes to succeed at sports. These high level D1 athletes do not.

They had no toughness, no fight, and from what I saw last night, no heart.
Don’t get me wrong — these guys care and they’re giving it all they’ve got, but when it comes to crunch time, winners embrace it. They want to step up to the line and put their feet on the other team’s throat. It’s a mentality that comes from a leader, and LSU just didn’t have it. No one developed into that role, and the coaching staff never seemed to push the issue.

Give a kid a cookie and they'll want the whole jar.
I'm pretty sure, at the beginning of the season, most would have been happy with a winning SEC record and a place in the Tournament. Then, when the team achieved both it became, "well they could make it to the Sweet Sixteen, maybe even Elite Eight."
Hell, I'm just happy we made the Tournament regardless of how frustrating the team was. Hopefully, next year will be better.

People like this make me sick. He is looking to blame anyone to sell papers and clicks.
Bottom line the fact is we only rotated 7 players and one (Darcy Malone) only played 4 minutes. They were tired and exhausted. Came up short at end. We need depth and production from bench. If we had a strong 8-9 players like NC State did we would have pulled that off. The better team lost and thats it.

Yes we have shown progress from season to season but in all honesty are you satisfied with last night? We clearly handed the game away once again. The defense is "Johnny can't make the shots for the players" but as a coach he can put his players in better positions to win games and learn from the same mistakes his teams makes repeatedly

While the teams' records have improved every yr, can you honestly say that this team improved from game to game this yr? The mistakes they made last nite were the same ones that they have been making all season long. That comes from coaching. Players miss/make shots, that's basketball. But when it comes to getting a team to improve as the season goes on, that is 200% on Coach Jone's shoulders. Watch the 2 AU games, the Mizzo game, the Ms.State game, the 2 aggie games. Compare those losses to last nite's. See any improvement at all?

He put his team in a position where they had to hit one shot in the last 10 minutes to win. Pretty good position to win if you ask me

What we lack is a player who wants the ball in the last 5 mins of a close game. The coach can't make those shots himself. Jordan Mickey makes one of four FTs are we go to OT. He makes two, we win. I'd say we were in a position to win.

As much as I sympathize with the kids being devastated, emotions in the locker room do not equate to "heart" on the court.
You quoted Pellerin's qualifier, but didn't highlight it, so I guess you missed it.

You don't read very well, do you?
As far as:

So following your thinking to its logical conclusion, any reporter or columnist who was never a "high level D1 athlete" should never write a word.
Sorry, but you revealed how seriously we should take you with your last "point." It's not a total loss though, since your line of reasoning and what you think makes salient points makes me

Uhhh yeah... We have a bunch of underclassmen and transfer students. It takes a little while to build chemistry. It's in players and coaches.
Posted on 3/20/15 at 10:40 am to timlan2057
None of our players wanted the ball. I really don't see how that is Jones' fault.

No. He can stick to facts. He is going on about complete conjecture. Too stupid to realize his perception biases so he comes up with nonsense conjecture and adages about "killer instants."
I won't even trust actual players when they rattle on about intangible nonsense like "killer instinct" or whatever. I certainly am not going to trust some loser who's never even experienced the feeling.
The whole game is crunch time. Points in the 1st half count just as much as points in the second. And I don't think anybody should be surprised a team who had 4 starters play over 37 minutes fared better in the first half than the second.
