I wouldn't say he's the solution either.

IMO, Etling has done everything and more than expected to improve his game and be a real leader on the field - as much as I encourage coaches to allow backups to get some valuable playing time, I don't think Etling deserved to be put on the sideline after his first half performance - he wasn't responsible for the last second TD to id the first half and he damn sure wasn't responsible for the safety and quick TD by Syracuse late in the 3rd quarter. I really question sometimes what the coaches are thinking as to their timing on some of these moves. No doubt the in game experience will help Brennan later in the year if he's called on in a hostile SEC game - I just hope he's not needed - I have confidence thar Etling will do a fine job.

He has been throwing on too many rollouts. I'm not sure why Canada is choosing to roll him out instead of giving him quick options. Etlings weakness has always been the inability to throw on the run.

I find it strange people choose this game to criticize Etling when he threw very well downfield, the one thing he's been consistently criticized for

Honestly, I thought Etling has looked quite good. I don't see anything that Brennan will fix.

It's true that the OL and play calling haven't done him many favors, but Etling does need to get better at
1) identifying/reading the blitz
2) checking out of long-developing play action and deep drops when appropriate
3) finding hot reads and delivering the ball quickly
4) stepping up in the pocket when pressure comes from the edge

quote:The real problem with Etling...I would say reading the field, not just read-to-react time. snap-read-react time. I.e., finding the WR and then making a timely throw (without hesitating, throw him open instead of waiting till open). Some of that is "chemistry" and his trust in his WR, some of it is indeed on him. quote:Slow-developing plays are the problem. We need a fast, short passing game. Then the protection issues become moot. Or mute, as the case may be.IF I'm right about what his major problem is (above), he might not be capable of running that offense; at least passing in it to be effective enough. quote:He also has happy feet and runs himself into trouble a lot of times. He needs to trust the pocket a bit more imo. Pocket presence/awareness. (not saying our Oline doesn't have problems, just pointing out my personal observations).Yep. He does have decent pocket awareness (better than Mett). But when he does fail at it, he does make it worse many times. In fact, he's the opposite of Mett. Mett would just get blowed up because he didn't feel pressure period. Etling feels it "wrong"; he feels it's coming from one place when it's coming from another... sometimes. He does do a good job of not running backwards (making it 10x worse) and keeping his eyes downfield. I'll give him credit for that.

you are spot on. This is the reason Myles was put in last week when the game was still in reach. The coaches know in SEC play this will only get worse.

The biggest problem with him really is he doesn't know how to check the ball down after his first option. Brennan did that well last week

No its not. He did great at this all last season. Remember how good it was when Etling came in an started using the check downs last season. Difference this year is the check downs arent getting open and there is no time to find them anyway.

I also have no idea how you think Brennan is magically better at hitting check downs. Again, the check downs arent open and there is no time.

We have a senior who doesnt turn the ball over and force things. (Aka- game manager we have all been asking for)

And we have a freshman who isnt game ready and did turn the ball over.

As another poster said, I dont see anything that playing Brennan would fix on the offense. Brennan has talent, but he is not a magic fix.

How on earth do the first 2 posts have 21 down votes, then 21 upvote a, when they say almost the exact same thing?

Hard to trust something that has proven to let you down.

We averaged 7.6 points per game vs Auburn, Florida, and Bama last season. We had 6 total first downs vs. Bama. We lost a game in which our opponent didn't score a touchdown. Our pass offense was ranked 105th in the country. What are you talking about?

It hasn't been seen by most yet but in the scrimmages I attended Brennan throws well on the move. The shear arm strength allows him to deliver the ball more accurately with his feet not set. It will all be revealed before the seasons out. 3/4 wide exclusively out of the shotgun will be our identity by mid October imho

Agreed! Whether some like it or not Brennan will be the QB very soon

I don't have faith in DE to make plays when we need it most. He's tough and great team player, but his game is way too limited to beast the Bamas and Clemsons. I get it, the Oline has not played well. DE doesn't get all the blame from me, but there have been more that half of his incomplete passes that were caused by himself.

I watched all the games 2 or 3 times this year. Unless he has 5+ seconds in the pocket, he is not effective. We need someone with a better arm and vision to make plays in this offense to keep the D on the sidelines more. We can talk about WR drops, but that would only account for about 8 plays give or take. Several times last game DE had a nice pocket but freaked out and held the ball or ran himself into trouble after 3 seconds. He has to fix that himself.
