LSU was 116 out of 128 last year in plays per game at 67. We can have all the discussions we want about more passing, and getting Guice involved, and having a true 3rd and 4th receiving option, etc.. But the only way all that stuff happens is if the coaches act like they aren't afraid to actually run offensive plays. And this isn't just b/c the offensive was unproductive last year. In 2013, with the best 3rd down % in the country, we only ran 68 plays/game. We need to be in the mid 70's to accommodate all of our play makers and get as many touches as possible.

Ok I'll bite. What about ground and pound offense + sub par defense? That would be a pretty good recipe for such a scenario

Our defense would have have up 31 plus points a game of we ran more plays

Ole miss would have put up 50

The defense also had a hand in this.

If we ran more plays, wouldn't that mean we had the ball longer and thus Ole Miss or Bama would have had it less? Why would that automatically mean they score more points?

Baylor led the nation in total offense last year and ran over 1100 plays for the year. They finished 107th in time of possession.

How many plays per game did Texas Tech run?

The defense had a hand in determining the number of plays our offense ran? I'd agree if we ran a way above average amount of plays but how so when we run so few?

The less our offense is on the field the more our defense is, it usually works like that. The more your defense is on the field the more likely they are to give up points.

Number of plays is a useless stat. Efficiency is the key.

I agree...winning requires a team effort. I'm old school...meaning I believe defence wins championships. That being said, one of our major problems has been that we are too predictable on offence (along with elementary WR routes). Fix this stuff + our talent =

Uh, yes. Are you seriously asking?

its easier on the defense if you slow the game down on offense.

we were very thin on the D-line.

TOP is a more telling stat in my view but like all stats it shouldn't be taken as a stand alone indicator.

Trying to run more plays when you can't move the ball results in faster 3 and outs/punts, and a more worn out defense.

If you don't have a good passing attack your best bet is to rely on your ground game, chew clock, and keep your defense fresh.

We weren't winning any shoot outs last year.
Edit: correction, we weren't winning any shoot outs against good teams last year. Steele managed to turn almost every W into a shoot out

3rd down conversion % is the most important offensive stat IMO, followed closely by FG/TD ration in the redzone

Miles is famous for producing teams that kill their own drives with penalties. We are consistently one of the most penalized teams in college football. The truth of the matter is, as long as they struggle with getting plays in on time and struggle with when to call the right offensive play, throwing the ball more will only compound the problem.
Good OC's call plays to set up other plays, they call plays by feel and rhythm. They are not happy when the rhythm is off do to stupid penalties and they demand in practice to be quicker. Miles offensive mind is control the ball and don't turn it over. The only time you generally see LSU's offense in some sort of rhythm is when they are handing off and getting 4 to 5 yards a carry.

I totally agreed with this, and have said the same thing several times.

I think the idea is to sustain drives and not go 3 and out as we like to do.

Because LSU never sustains drives?

i'd agree in a vacuum, but i bet our time of possession is pretty high too, which definitely plays into les' game-shortening fetish
