CAMERON'S TOUCH

GREAT ARTICLE BY HUNT PALMER

Cam Cameron brings a different mindset to LSU’s offense. Don’t play to run the clock out. Play to win the damn thing.

In past years, the Tigers have set up the pass with the power running game. Not this time. The pass set up the run.

Last Saturday was the first time two Tiger receivers have gone over 100 yards in the same game since Michael Clayton and Josh Reed did it at Kentucky back in 2001. Landry and Beckham were eight years old at the time.

LSU went to the air on 14 of 19 third downs and connected on eight of those throws. The Tigers converted 13 of those 19 third downs for a sizzling 68 percent.
"We were on the same page, communicating well with each other,” Mettenberger said of he and Cameron. "I was seeing a lot of things he was seeing and vice versa, and we’re going to keep progressing. That’s going to get better as well as our offense.”

A program that at times looked like it was fighting with one arm firmly tethered behind its back may have finally shaken free.

Ironically against Bama last year we played like Cam was the OC, until we got a 1st and 10 at the Bama 32 with 2 minutes left, then we reverted back to 3 yards and a cloud of Miles - playing for the g-------m field goal.

Mettenberger threw the ball 22 times in the first half, four more than any first half last season.

Remember the Florida game last year? LSU couldn’t run the ball, so what did they do? Run it. Why? Because Mettenberger threw an early interception and Miles didn’t trust him anymore.

Either Miles now trusts his strong-armed senior or Cameron told Miles he didn’t have a choice. Either way, it worked.

No play better exemplified the newfound trust than the third and five with four minutes left on the clock and the Tigers up 10.

The easy decision would have been to pound Terrence Magee into the TCU line and punt it away. The defense probably won’t give up 10 in four minutes. Instead, Mettenberger dropped and spun a gorgeous back-shoulder throw to Odell Beckham for 26 yards and a first down.

because our pass pro was kinda shitty (both from OL and RBs) and Les may have thought we could gut out a tough road win with an inexperienced QB and patchwork OL. maybe not the sexiest strategy, but one that had worked before and was prob warranted.

Your subject is spot on, as that's the reason this offense is different. The whole "mindset" thing. And it can be seen by anyone that's followed LSU in the Miles era.

What I saw last week did not look ANYTHING like the LSU offense we've come to lament lately.

I got no clue how good the defense will be (mainly because I don't know how good TCU's offense is). I know our D backs are much better than most, and I know our D line is talented. But one thing I do know is this. This season will feel different in that if we're down two scores, late in the game, and the defense seems to have figured things out, I'm going to be infinitely more confident that our offense can actually muster two more scores. It's been a long time since I felt like that.

Fwiw #23 Catalogs kick return, the fumble by Blue is what kept TCU close. The second QB came in and did a better job moving the ball against our D with the Option read and catalog scored another TD that way. Other than some missed assignments and missed tackles our D looked pretty damn good. They will only get better, they have the talent at every position and Chavis coaching them!!!

TIME OF POSSESSION was insane as well. I know for the first half, the TCU offense sat on the sideline watching Mett go up and down the field. If we can keep our defense on the sideline and well rested, that will help them with injuries and fatigue later in the season.

Ironically, failing to execute on passing plays instead of running out the clock cost LSU the Chick fila bowl...

13/19 on 3rd downs keeps the defense on the sideline. Winning formula.

Offense finally has the swagger that the defense has had since Chief came along.

Interestingly, looking at sit-stats, LSU rushing plays are skewed towards 1st and 2nd down even more than the past, while the passing att on 3rd are @ 50% more than other downs.
Only one game but doesn't support the pass setting up run. Maybe just taking what D gives and better reads by QB.

I don't think psychotic negativity was what OP meant by "different".

Passing plays are actually set up like someone knows what they dare doing. The Cam hire will be a home run.
