Because it was a motivational catalyst for a great team that won 57 games. A total which, all the butthurt on this board notwithstanding, is STILL tied for most wins in school history.
I guarantee if we had won this thing in 5 games some of you guys knocking the idea would be lining up to build the case for it.

OK - but we didn't. We lost 2 in a row.
Even if we did sweep the whole thing, it would be asinine to put a can of corn in the Hall of Fame. Put a bat or a ball. Why don't you put someone's lucky wad of chewing gum in there while you're at it?
