Texas Tech run defense (by the numbers)
Posted by Dawgsontop34 on 12/7/15 at 12:58 pm201
I'm sure y'all have talked about this a little bit on here, but it really is hard to understate just how bad the TT run defense is. I watched them in person this year, and that is one of the worst form-tackling teams I've seen in ages. Here are some numbers from the season that should get y'all pretty dang excited to watch Fournette run for 300+ in the bowl game. In parentheses by the team name is the rank of that team's rush offense.
Texas Tech 2015 Run Defense by game
Sam Houston St. (9, FCS) - 46 rushes, 317 yards, 6.9 ypc, 5TDs (Donavan Williams: 12 car, 99 yds, 4TD)
UTEP (99) - 46 rushes, 227 yards, 4.9 ypc, 1TD (Aaron Jones: 17 car, 139 yds, TD
Arkansas (39) - 43 rushes, 228 yards, 5.3 ypc, 1TD (Alex Collins: 28 car, 170 yds, TD)
TCU (24) - 47 rushes, 247 yards, 5.3 ypc, 3TDs (Aaron Green: 28 car, 162 yds, 2TD)
Baylor (5) - 52 rushes, 368 yards, 7.1 ypc, 5TDs (Shock Linwoods: 20 car, 221 yds, 2TD)
Iowa State (53) - 45 rushes, 315 yards, 7.0 ypc, 3TDs (Mike Warren: 23 car, 245 yds)
Kansas (121) - 40 rushes, 145 yards, 3.6 ypc, 1TD (De'Andre Mann: 15 car, 107 yds)
Oklahoma (17) - 57 rushes, 405 yards, 7.1 ypc, 7TDs (Samaje Perine: 23 car, 201 yds, 4TD; Joe Mixon: 16 car, 154 yds, 2TD)
Oklahoma State (110) - 36 rushes, 184 yards, 5.1 ypc, 3TDs (JW Walsh: 8 car, 80 yds, TD; Raymond Taylor: 5 car, 58 yds, 2TD)
West Virginia (16) - 57 rushes, 300 yards, 5.3 ypc, 4TDs (Wendell Smallwood: 22 car, 163 yds, TD; Rushel Shell: 14 car, 111 yds, 2TD)
Kansas State (74) - 34 rushes, 123 yards, 3.6 ypc, 3TDs (Charles Jones: 18 car, 99 yds)
Texas (20) - 48 rushes, 403 yards, 8.4 ypc, 6 TDs (Chris Warren: 25 car, 276 yds, 4TD; Tyrone Swoopes: 15 car, 98 yds, 2TD)
In total: six 300+ yard games, two 400+ yards games, nine 3+TD games, four 5+TD games, eleven 100+ yd rushers, five 200+ yd rushers, eight 2+ TD rushers)
The only two teams who didn't rush for 5 ypc against were the 74th, 99th, and 121st ranked rushing offense. Texas Tech finished with the 125th ranked rush defense, and every team they faced who has a top 20 rushing offense ran for at least 300. LSU is ranked 10th. Fournette, Williams, and Guice should have an absolute field day if Tech doesn't get their stuff figured out before the bowl game.

Aggy was bad too, yet they managed to crowd the box enough to keep LSU in check, relatively.

only problem is most of those teams could complete forward passes. Tech will completely sell out to stop the run and Harris and Wr's will have to win 1on1 matchups

Yeah, and they're not very good on defense.

Cam decided to prove a point to all of the naysayers by airing it out. Everyone saw how horrible Harris is, so now Cam and Les will feel justified in going back to ground and pound.

We ran for 244 against aTm,and our season average was 246.
ETA: their season average (after LSU) was 205 ypg, so we put up ~20% more yards than they did on average.

Aggy was bad....Texas Tech is atrocious. We still ran the ball effectively against them, it was the forward pass that was an issue against them, anyways.
We could beat Tech by literally not throwing the ball a single time. That's how bad they are at tackling.

Aggy was giving up 205 per game and 5.1 per carry. They held the best rushing attack in the conference to 245 yards and 5.1 per carry.
They held LSU in check.

Texas?
That's my biggest response to all of the doubts. Texas has a worse passing offense than LSU, and their running back was a true freshman 3rd string guy playing in his second career game. That makes me feel confident in LSU's rushing ability.

They have the 4th ranked passing defense, LSU is 46th.
Texas Tech has the 113th ranked passing defense.
Tech gave up more than 1 yard extra per carry, 25 more rushing tds and 800 more yards on the ground than tamu on the season.

We could run the ball on every down and not have to punt once.

That is a big negative.
We insisted on throwing the ball for three quarter before we said "F-it" and ran the ball straight at the Aggie.
