If Pitt did not beat Clemson this year, do you think Matt Canada would have gotten as serious of a look as he did? Would you be happy with the hire if they hadn't won? I've been watching some of the Pitt Highlights recently and I'm glad they did win, it was able to put a needed spotlight on him for us to take a deeper look into this candidate. If they hadn't won the big game this year, I know many here would be skeptical about the hire, probably myself included.

A lot of people were skeptical about the Saban hire in 2000 as well because he was a coach at a small school and he didn't really light the world on fire all the time. Learning about Aranda's cerebral approach and mindset this season warmed me up to Canada more than anything he did at Pitt. After you listen to him talk for a while he really does come across as a versatile, smart, extremely knowledgeable guy and I think he's the offensive version of Aranda. I'm way too excited about him

ETA: long story short, what happened this season at Pitt doesn't really change how the guy's mind works, so it wouldn't have changed my opinion about the hire either way

But, he did and with a much less talented roster than Clemson has. Imagine what he could do with a evenly matched or slightly better offensive personnel.

That is what killed CLM and CC, they ONLY won games in which they greatly outmatched the talent on the other side of the ball. They were losing more and more games as other teams were starting to obtain equal talent.

I agree, that's what I'm excited for. We're going to finally start doing schemes according to our players and skillset to give us advantageous matchups. Just makes me wonder where we would have ended up. If he didn't have the big win, I don't know if he would have even been on the radar unfortunately.

Some people are never pleased no matter who you hire. You are evidently one of those people.

imo, he's done a good job throughout his career. At NC State, his scoring offense improved dramatically every year he was there. I want to say in year one, they were 97th, year two 54th, and in year three they were 44th or so. At Northern Illinois, he had the 12th ranked scoring offense as well. I think he'll do a great job, at LSU.

I hope the decision to hire Canada wasn't made solely on the outcome of one game. I'd assume his entire body of work played a bigger role. Let's face it, had Pitt lost to Clemson, respectably, no one would've faulted him, probably just given him credit for his offensive plan against a very good Clemson D. I'd rather hire a guy that has shown he can develop QB's & has shown he can scheme with the athletes he has & have a consistently productive offense rather than a guy who pulls a rabbit out of his hat now & again.

I think that CMC will need to show something very different at LSU compared to what we saw this year at Pitt. As long as he does what he says that he is going to do then it should be just fine.

True. They managed to underprepare or underperform against equal or slightly lesser talent.

Was Canada the OC at Wisconsin with they put up something like 80 points on an opponent?

I believe the decision to hire Canada was that he was able to take a QB that couldn't make it at Tennessee and in 1 year his QBR before the bowl game was a 160.2. I get that number can get inflated but it was higher than Deshawn Watson who is a proven QB. This shows he can develop QB's and that is why he was hired along with his offensive approach to the game.

LSU has been screaming for a better QB developer for a very long time. That problem must be corrected in order to attract great talent. Canada is supposed to be that answer.
My question is whether or not that type Offense can withstand SEC caliber Defenses. Let's hope so.

Lol Saban had Mich State in the top 5 at one time. Mich State is not a small school.

Beating Clemson us icing on te cake but its not really relevant. Scoring 40+ pts/gm with average talent is what has everyone excited.

Agreed Brazos. And I clearly remember watching LSU beat Michigan State and thinking in my seat at the Indy Bowl how their coach was doing a good job despite playing second fiddle to Michigan and Ohio State in that region. I scanned the program and was very surprised at the wide net that school had cast to get recruits. Particularly at the skill set positions where speed is required. I knew when we hired that man that he would be a step up from the previous 3 coaches we had hired.
