Something will fill that vacuum. Just come from a different set of pros.

as irritating as it is for players to leave early, I don't think anything should be done about it....if a player is good enough to go pro before he graduates, then good for him...

I understand the post.

He is asking since only 5 players can get a grade by the NFL to decide if they want to declare, willthat help slow players leaving early.....

My answer, no..... players always have people in their ear telling them to take the jump

This is what the OP is talking about, and honestly I doubt it helps LSU.

The other major change is the draft grade underclassmen receive from the advisory board. In the past, there were five categories: first round, at least second round, at least third round, fourth-sevenths rounds or undrafted. Now, there will be only three: first round, second round or stay in school.
I like this part, this will help alot.

Imo they should give underclassmen the option to return to school post draft if they don't sign by a certain date like baseball.

I think the changes will have the opposite effect. Now the only peer review a player will have is from college coaches, groupies, family members, and agents. 3 out of the 4 will say go pro 90% of the time. Taking the NFL out of the mix is ridiculous.

Also, knowing that a 3rd round projection will get the same "stay in school" message that anyone else could get? Bad, bad, very bad.

I agree with you on both points. I hate the NFL attrition, but believe restriction is the wrong way to check it. Some players have kids, and it's almost irresponsible of them not go pro early if they can.

Now, if players start receiving stipends (and/or if bagmen start printing money) and the improved financial condition encouraged more players to stay and finish their degree (and play all 4 years), I won't be opposed.

Nope.

A lot of of people dont like hearing this, but majority of these kids goals are to get to the NFL. Thats it. Sure they wanna win in college as well, not saying they dont. But ultimately, its about getting to the next level for most of them. And, just because you are drafted in the 3rd or 4th round doesnt mean you arent / cant be better than the person that is drafted in the 1st or 2nd in the NFL. That is always happening in the NFL. What if its a player that has had off the field issues but is a 1st or 2nd round talent? They drop him to the 5th round based off what has happened off the field. Every team interprets off the field issues differently. Look at TM for example. Some teams took him completely off their draft board, others dropped him to the 6th or 7th round, some in the 5th, and some still wanted him in the 3rd, which is where he ended up being drafted. All it takes is 1 team to draft you.

The NFL is acting like their evals are always correct and perfect. When its not. You can have an opinion on how you think a player will be in the pros, sure. But its just an opinion. You have no idea what this player will end up being at the next level. Some guys taken in the 5th do better than guys taken in the 1st and 2nd. Nobody can predict that 100% accurately.

And its dumb to do this now with the rookie wage scale in place. Its not about getting that rookie contract. Its about getting that 2nd contract. The best way to do that is to get in the NFL young and healthy and start getting as much experience as you can to help you improve and get that big 2nd contract. 1st and 2nd round contracts are significantly bigger than 3rd round and later contracts. But there isnt that big of a difference in a 3rd round contract and a 6th round contract.

Trai Turner was taken in the 3rd RD #92 overall. He signed a 4yrs $2.79m contract with $539,000 signing bonus and guaranteed money.

Lamin Barrow was taken in the 5th RD #156 overall. He signed a 4yrs $2.41m contract with $191,160signing bonus and guaranteed money.

Alfred Blue was drafted in the 6th RD #181 overall. He signed a 4yrs $2.37m contract with $117,932signing bonus and guaranteed money.

Not that big of a difference between a 3rd round contract and a 6th round contract when you look at the big picture. The NFL is doing this so it looks like they want the kids to stay in school. Its a good PR move by them. But $$$ talks. And the $$$ says there isnt that big of a difference in being drafted in the 3rd round or the 6th round. Might as well go a year earlier and be taken in the 6th rather than stay in college another year. Sure they could move up a round or 2, but they also have just as good a chance of hurting their stock as they do improving it. And you risk the injury factor as well by returning to school.

It's not going to do anything.

And its 5 unless there are more than 5 worthy candidates on a given team that want to submit. I bet the numbers change at all, and wouldn't be surprised one bit if another record number of underclassmen declare.

Now look at how many third round and sixth round picks are still in the league after three years. The difference is bigger than a signing bonus.

This. All of this.

I don't think this will be good for anyone.
