The previous season, the Gators won the national championship and thrashed LSU 56–13, and they came into the game favored. But it was LSU who jumped out to a big early lead, scoring two touchdowns in the first 8 minutes on runs by Herb Tyler and Tommy Banks. The Gators came right back with two touchdown runs by Fred Taylor, each of which capped off an 80-yard drive.

Then, Doug Johnson threw an ill-advised pass, and Cedric Donaldson picked it off and returned it for a touchdown to give LSU a 21–14 lead. The Gators' frustration mounted when another Johnson pass was picked off, this time by Mark Roman, and when Herb Tyler scored another touchdown to give LSU a 28–14 lead with 11:40 to go, the Gators appeared to be in big trouble.

Undaunted, Johnson responded with a 13-play, 78-yard drive that ended with Fred Taylor getting into the end zone to cut the Tigers' lead to 28–21. LSU could do nothing with their next possession, and Doug Johnson began moving the ball downfield again. He then faced a rush on a third and two and threw up a Hail Mary which was intercepted by Raion Hill. The Tigers held on for the 28–21 upset.[6] Kevin Faulk appeared on the next week's cover of Sports Illustrated.

Yeah that loss to Ole Miss was turrible. Highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

Was there on the 35 yard line about 40 rows up. Best seats I've ever sat in at Tiger Stadium.

Was in the North end zone that night. 2 irritating Florida girls sitting behind us with red and blue balloons in hand tapping everyone around them whenever the Gators did anything of substance. When LSU went up 21- 14, let's just say those balloons were taken and subsequently stomped on the ground in celebration. What a night for the Tigers. I'll never forget it.

My first game at Tiger Stadium. Bought tickets from a co-worker that Friday who said he didn't want to go watch LSU get "killed". Easiest late night drive back to WM I've ever made.

I watched that game in a Bay side condo in Ocean City Maryland and it was the most memorable game I've ever seen. We threw a party with our work crews and ended up kicking out the only two Fla fans before the first qtr ended... just because.

Mind altering substances were far too plentiful.

Mark Roman is from my home town and I went nutz when he got his pick!

I lived in Memphis at the time. Watched it with a friend who was a Ole Miss fan. Talked shite all night about how it would be ugly the next week...

Also wore my LSU gear to the MEMPHIS Titans vs Raiders game in the liberty bowl the next day...I was the hit of the crowd, UT fans were ecstatic

What a crazy year

I had some under the glass of my coffee table for a coulple of years after. I remember being on the field and seeing the goal posts being passed around the stands.
