Yep. Also, LSU is a damn good job but the competition in recruiting and play here is fierce. Not an easy job.

Let's put this in perspective, in the last 20 years, are the two biggest (and most accomplished) coaches to leave one coaching job for another in college Bret Bielema and Chris Petersen?

UT then. A lot of big jobs have been open the last 5 years and Michigan and OSU are about the only ones to land the big fish they wanted. Both got coaches who were available.

Next door to #3, and fairly close to #1, and Georgia and Alabama.

You do know every state in the south can clame this rt?

LSU is a great job, no doubt. But we will be in the same boat as UF in a coaching search. Might take two tries to get it rt. Some people would argue LSU didn't get it rt the last time they hired a coach.

Both of them are good examples. Texas did waste a lot of time on Saban, though. I can't say I blame them. Tennessee ended up with low rent Brian Kelly.

I would say true.

Lsu 4th behind USC, Texas and Ohio State.

Top notch facilities, stadium,
You aren't recruiting against anyone in your home state.

I would hate to be the coach that has to follow up Saban at Alabama.

someone on that list doesn't belong and its Tennessee by a wide margin.

LSU is easily top 10 job knocking on top 5. However the issue isn't top 5 job its more top job that is hiring. The only big boy on the block right now is USCw

Their issues in the past though are deeper than simply the coaching search.

UF has to compete with 3 other instate schools, USCw even more. UGA is almost identical to LSU. I'll give you Mich and OSU, but as far as being clearly better than LSU, there aren't 5 teams that are

GA's population is over double that of LA, and UGA currently has 20 players from FL on their roster, so one would think UGA has an edge on LSU regarding talent pool. I don't care, UGA should have stellar baseball and football teams every year given the talent in GA (it's not like G Tech is a real in-state recruiting competitor), plus national recruit QB's most of the Richt era that have started or spent time in the NFL, go figure. Stepping back, it seems to be very difficult to remain relevant in the conference for multiple year cycles, with the exception of one team. Lot of parity with talent, so one better have a difference maker for a coach.

Brian Kelly
Chip Kelly

Jimbo
Scary Gary Patterson

Brian Kelly --- 54-21 at ND with one BCS bowl, a blowout loss to Alabama. Not sure how this is an upgrade.
Chip Kelly -- excellent record at Oregon, lost BCSNCG. Repeatedly failed to prove himself against strong defenses (LSU, Stanford, Auburn). Lost to Miles 40-27 with Jarrett Lee at QB. Not sure this is an upgrade.
JDR --- never been a college head coach, never recruited. Not sure how you know this is an upgrade.
Jimbo --- Finally, a national championship coach. He is under contract until 2022, makes $5,000,000 a year and has to pay a $5,000,000 buyout to leave. We can classify this under the heading Pipe Dream.
Patterson --- One Big Five Conference title. Losing season in 2013. Lost to Miles 37-27. Not sure this is an upgrade.

The point is not whether we are a top 5 job. The point is whether we have someone lined up that can do a better job. Your post shows the problem quite well.

Yeh I think that its more likely that we hire a much better coach. LSU has never hired a coach when our program has been this good.

You're wrong but thanks for the input. None of the things I listed have anything to do with Miles

LSU is not a top 5 job. Definitely top 10 tho. It doesn't matter about record right now. It's about money, resources, recruiting base, tradition, fan base

1. Texas- flagship program in talent rich state, boatloads of money, tradition, unlimited resources, largest fan base
2. Florida- flagship program in talent rich state, lots and lots of money, SEC, unlimited resources
3. USCw- flagship program in talent rich California, unlimited resources, tradition, Hollywood, second largest fan base
T4. Ohio State
T4. Georgia
T4. Notre dame
T7. LSU
T7. Alabama
T7. Michigan

Are you defining recruiting base as a home state or the 250 mile radius from a campus?

Thank you. Literally no one understands the fact that just because Texas technically has more 5 star and 4 star players that they don't have a recruiting advantage over LSU when they're splitting their state with 10 other major colleges. The fact that we get Louisiana all to ourselves and are a stone's throw away from Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama makes us the easiest program to recruit for in the nation. Can anyone name another college in a talent rich state that doesn't have to worry about another major college taking its recruits?

Georgia. They have much more quantity than Louisiana in the talent department, and due to the scheme Georgia Tech runs they aren't competing with Tech for that talent. Just like LSU though, they are dealing with out of state schools poaching that talent.

Schools in Texas, Florida, California, and Georgia are the only schools that can be successful with 85 home grown players, and that's strictly due to population. The rest of us have to go out of state.

Bama, UF, Ohio State, Michigan, ND, USC, UT come to mind as legitimate claims of being better jobs. Maybe even Fla State. So LSU is not at all necessarily in the top 5.
