We're still terrible at connecting on long passes. More slants, passes to the TE, dump-offs to the RB & FB--that's what I want to see. Quick strikes over the middle of the field, which have been missing for almost the entire Miles Era.

The offense from last night just needs to keep doing what its doing.

634 total yards. Most ever vs sec opponent. 42 points. Complete domination and you want them to change play calling

nah. we're kinda close on em and have guys that can get behind the defense. I think the deep ball will be the next step in the evolution of #DannyFootball.

we can have it all, baw. just watch.

ETA: actually, I hope the next step in Danny's evolution is learning not to get hit when he runs.

You have to throw bombs to keep the defense honest. Wow you should know this

No, passing short, mid and long is necessary to keep a defense honest. We just need to hit a few.

Not change it. Just tweak it. One bomb a game is fine. Or two at most.

If we ever connected on those with regularity, I would say it's a viable part of the gameplan. But we suck at it. It's like saying, "Hey, look, we can throw a long pass. We're not going to complete it, but we can throw it a long way."

Once Danny begins connecting on those, look out.

What? Keep the safeties leaning back and concerned about play action.

The bombs will start to hit their targets and it forces the safeties to play at proper depth and hesitate when they see a handoff

JEEBUS.

We get the safeties to have to stay out of the box for fear of letting an explosive play to occur and you want to stop that?

While we all would like to see those plays be completed.....do you think a sefety can simply say " ehh. They aren't connecting, so I don't really need to drop back deep in support"?

Gawddamn. Some people would complain if we hung them with a brand new rope.

So don't pass to wide open receivers down the field? Lol.

To be a more complete offense we'll have to be able take our shots down the field or teams like Alabama, who can play press coverage, will take away the short stuff.

They're doing if to keep the safety's from cheating up. Has to be done or defenses will only defend 15yds from the LOS on passing downs , stack the middle & flats and zone the shite out of us. It's the punch-counter punch of football.

Even if we don't connect on them, it forces our opponent to respect the deep ball.

Stretching the field serves its purpose. Keeps safeties from being too close to the box and opens up the running game. Besides, 19 completions to 9 different receivers shows we weren't too "bomb-oriented".

It does more than that. It makes the DBs think twice about jumping the short routes. Yeah, completing a couple would be nice, but you just can't live on short routes against good DBs.

We run other plays to keep defenses honest also ( well we will now). Coach O said last week we expect to see 4wr sets and run 4 verticals. We will throw deep to keep the safeties back. He wants an offense like USC had 5-10 yrs ago. Pass early finish with runs...you could see that philosophy last night.

So it's really a throw-away play, not designed to actually complete a pass but just move the safeties.

I'd rather see a completed pass but that's just me.

Don't get me wrong--I love a long bomb, and connecting on one is one of the most exciting plays in the game. But have we done that this season? I can't remember one.

I'm ok with them going deep when he sees the wr is wide open. As long as it's not 3rd and short when we need the drive to stay alive
