He looked like one of the few guys that knew what was going on with that weird play.

Heads up play for sure but I'm guessing he was already jogging in from center, thinking the third out was secured. Got close to second, saw what was going on and covered. Nonetheless, a great play!

Can someone describe the play? I couldn't watch the first few innings.

Slow roller to first Chinea bobbled it put picks it back up with his foot still on the bag the runner jumps clean over the bag so chinea tags it again and ump calls him safe. Im guessing Stevenson was coming in because he thought it was three outs but if he wasn't it was good heads up play. For some reason the runner thought he could take second while chinea had the ball at first and stevie put the tag on him at second.

It looked like the AU player was competing in the long jump. I'm not sure he ever got within three feet of the base.

The Gump Ump called him safe. For some reason he hauled arse to second and got nailed.

File it under: Things you only see in Alabama with SEC officials.

Thanks. Maybe the Auburn base runner thought he could take second because the iss and 2nd baseman were headed to the dugout?

That could be it too. At the time it was hard to know what the hell was going on I dont think anyone knew really.

Did the runner ever touch first base?

Maybe after the game.

I hope we can get a video clip. Between this call and the antics of the home plate ump, it was truly embarrassing (but not unusual) for SEC officiating.

Didnt even realize he came nowhere near touching the bag at the game.

I figured chineas foot was off the bag and he was safe.

Damn

They explained on the replay that since Chinea went and tagged the base after the runner had jumped over it, the runner had no choice but to go to second base or he would be out. Basically, he had to turn his hit into a double forcefully.

As odd as it seems , once a runner passes a bag @ 1rst he is presumed to have touched the bag....Defense has to appeal to the umpire (verbally)before he gets back to base or physically touch the runner for the official to call him out. IK it sounds crazy but just 'touching" the base doesnt gv you that out bc he has past it..... and obviously missed it.....which I believe Chinea was about to tag him, before AU player jetted to 2nd... very odd.....i guess he jumped clear over the glove @ 1rst....
