Interesting tweet about underclassmen who have declared for the past three drafts. I didn't realize so many went undrafted. Would be good for our athletes to know, especially since we've got guys who will leave if they think they can be 5th or 6th round picks

So next year there's a limit where only 5 players from each team can be evaluated for the draft?

Does anyone know who determines which 5 get evaluated?

They need to find a way to discourage kids from declaring early. Most of these guys who have a chance at the NFL come from poor families looking to get money. It's hard to compete with that. I'd love to see the NFL step up with a bonus program for kids who obtain their degrees.

i don't have any stats, but i'd gander to say that LSU underclassmen may do better than the average of 53% drafted. the only LSU underclassman who wasn't drafted last year was anthony johnson.

These kids need to look at what Collins did this year..... His confidence went sky high bc he knew he was the senior and he's pretty damn talented but guys like Rosco and hunter, mills and Collins, Hawkins, and both Alexander's should all come back and I think all would benefit with the draft and have a shot at winning lots of games next year!!! Maybe Mills would be the only one I would say has topped out but would maybe get an extra million by coming back bc he would look soooo much better with all these guys coming back!!! They really need to start staying.

Or they can look at what Landry, OBJ, Hill, Peterson, etc did as rookies making $$$ in the NFL.

Hard to counter that to a 20 year old.

A good idea but it would make colleges even more of a bunch of diploma mills than they are now.

But those guys are skilled enough at the time they left. Some of the underclassman in previous years before, and even this year, are not.

I wouldn't mind it if seniors got paid. Good way to compensate them for waiting 1 more year and help them get a degree too.

A bonus program for getting your degree? Brilliant

I disagree about the NFL needing to discourage players from declaring early. That misses the mark about what's really happening. Since the round a player is drafted in is highly correlated to the likelihood of making an NFL roster, it's probably the underclassmen projected to be drafted after the second round that should be discouraged from taking that chance.

I'd love to tinker with the database with this kind of data to see to what kind of odds can be identified.

No one is arguing that first rounders (OBJ, Peterson) shouldn't go or that players who go in the second day (Landry/Hill/R. Randle, etc.) shouldn't consider it.

Last year Collins was a later first, likely second rounder and Hill was a likely third rounder. Both struggled with the decision. One came back, one didn't. Jeremy Hill got a $1 million signing bonus, $420,000 this year and his $590,000 salary next year is guaranteed. Not bad.

Now, La'El. He's a genius. Cyrus Kouandjio of Bama went about where La'El was projected last year. He got a four year, $4.8 million contract, roughly $2.8 million guaranteed. Breaking those numbers down, he got a $1.8 million signing bonus and a $420,000 salary. So Cyrus may $2.2 million more than La'El last year. Next year, Cyrus gets $588,000 plus a $50,000 "workout" bonus. Meaning that in 2014/2015, Cyrus will make roughly $2.9 million.

By coming back, La'El put himself into the first round. He is probably not a top ten pick but he'll be in the teens. So compare him to Michigan's Taylor Lewan. Taylor got a four year, $11.5 million contract. This included a $6.7 million signing bonus to go with a $420,000 base salary. He gets the same base salary next year as Cyrus but throw on top an extra $400,000 guaranteed bonus. In year one, Lewan will make more than double what Koundajio makes in two years and over the two years, Lewan makes 3x what Koundajio will make.

By coming back, La'El is gonna get PAID.

Oh, and for guys like Hawkins and Kwon, here's the reality. The highest drafted OT in the 4th round got paid $505,000 and he'll make $585,000 next year. Only $385,000 of his contract is guaranteed. In other words, about 1/8th what La'El will make and 1/4th what Koundajio will make. Coming out for Hawkins is really, really dumb, especially since most think he could be a late first, early second rounder with another year of seasoning, but is a 4th or 5th rounder this year.

Yeah but these dudes had monster years which prompted them to enter the draft. For them there wasn't really any higher to climb really. OBJ and Landry knew they wouldn't have a QB even close to Mett delivering them the ball, and Peterson was already a legit top 5 talent.

Hunter is a physical freak but had literally 1.5 sacks on the year. I know stats aren't everything, but nothing at all about his stats screams standout draft prospect. Hawkins and Alexander both have a ton of room to improve as well.

That's what gets me about these guys and ones like Anthony Johnson or Tharold Simon in the past. Declaring for the draft when you didn't even have a good year.

I agree with everything you said. Just keep in mind, these are 20 yo kids who have an agent in their ear pumping their ego. And they see the $$$ and want it now and don't want to wait.

And the agents will push the chance of an injury in their senior year, which could kill their draftability.

Rasco is a senior but your point is well-taken. Unless you're family is financially strapped you should stay in school if you get less than a 3rd round rating. A guy like Hawkins could really blow things up with another year or two in the league. I think Hunter, both Alexander's, Mills and JC could all join Hawkins as upper round picks if they hang for another year.

Injuries are part of life. If a guy goes into the draft and is drafted in the low rounds or an UDFA and they get hurt in training camp, they are done.

Odds are very much in your favor coming back that you will NOT suffer a career limiting injury. Odds are also in your favor that if you come back and play against 19 & 20 year olds when you are 21 or 22, you will perform better and increase your draft stock. Higher round picks get more money guaranteed, which means more financial security if you get injured.

I know too logical for 20 year olds with agents in their ear and family telling em to go get paid. Which is why so many make the error.

good debate...finally a OP with no bullshite added in.

Also wish that someone in coaching staff could present this kind of stuff to the players to help them realize opportunities and they make the right choices in their lives
