I am probably going to get hammered for bringing this up, but I'll go on record as saying I prefer a more "pro-style" offense like we ran pre-Crowton days. Running out of the I-formation is the best way to play "smash-mouth" football, which historically has been our forte'. Certainly, a dominant OLine is key, and that hasn't really shown up with any consistency. However, seems like we need a good lead blocker and a more "running start" for Scott to help the power game. You don't get that out of the Spread formation.

Further, it appears to me that we are a much better team when we have the continuing threat of a run game, and thus create much more actual stretch of the defense off of a play-action passing setup. The Spread, for all its glamorous look, tends to be more horizontal in LSU's offense, not vertical. It's like "we're not fooling anyone". As I've stated in the past, with some deeper thrown balls, that could change things for our Spread, but for now, we're acting like a team that's trying to use deception to mask our inability to win the power game - not good!

I say "Use the spread in obvious passing situations only - otherwise, we lose our best potential with our running game as well as the positive dynamics of play-action passing.

Some of what you say is valid, but most of the great teams are going to the spread of some sort.
USC,TX,OK,FL,Ohio State, even Penn State and AL use it some. Chances are if LSU plays in the Championship game again they will face the spread. It is better to practice against it if you use it.

I think both of you have good points, there are some things I dislike about the spread formation as well. I hate when we have a empty backfield because that exposes the QB with no protection

I really don't think you should structure your offense for the purpose of being able to better defend against it in practice. I understand your point, but disagree. There is enough knowledge that LSU's scout squad has in its back pocket to be able to effectively practice against the spread. If not, we need to fire some defensive coaches again.

Bottom line, you build your offense around your best chance of success.....for your offense. Same goes for building your defense. Each are separate and distinct.

You adapt your philosophy to fit the talent, you don't force the talent to fit your philosophy. This is what LSU is doing.

Tigr N Atl,

Which do you say LSU is doing? I agree with your comment, but which do you see as best suited for LSU.

We do run out of the I-Formation from time to time...CS and KW ring a bell?

We run out of the I very little now, but when we do it generally works.

Why?...it's a damn good question.

in total agreement with this.

The spread is a formidable offense when used in concert with an effective power I. The object of the game is ball control and protection with the end result being red zone scoring opportunities and keeping the other guy's d on the field.

I probably overstated my point of using the Spread only in obvious passing situations..... instead, I believe in "mixing it up" to keep the defense off-guard....not bad to occasionally come out on 1st down in the Spread.

honestly man, the offense Crowton is running is not a spread, it has power running and dropback passing mixed in with elements of the spread, I don't know what to call that mess. It looks like Les fighting Crowton from opening it up too much.

Could be, but I don't like the results either. I've played in plenty of mudbowls before, and it's hard to roll everything out in the rain. So, maybe Les and Crowton will open it up more as we roll into the heart of the season......let's hope that's all it is!
