I saw ole Smoke referenced in a thread about dog piling. Well it got me thinking, and I thought about playing a game of what if. What if we had any other coach the years Smoke was here(2002-2006 for those of you who have blocked it from your memories) would LSU have won another CWS? I looked at the old rosters and they had quite a bit of talent (Aaron Hill, Jon Zeringue, JC Holt, etc.) , especially the 2 years he actually made it to Omaha. From my memories of those years, Smoke pretty much was fat sloppy frick that didn't look like he put much effort into anything, specifically coaching. I don't remember much of the teams we played though, anyone have any thoughts?

Laval once referred to LSU baseball fans as 'the enemy' at a Coaches Committee meeting.

That didn't go over well with his best paying customers at the meeting.

I've done my best to mentally block out the time that wooden Indian was our HC.

I think Smoke's two problems were pitching talent and discipline.

I felt like I saw Jon Zeringue and Matt Liuzza at Bogies as often as I saw Justin Vincent.

Also, when we made it to Omaha, it was clear we didn't have the pitchers to stay in any of those games.

Good point about the pitching, when I was looking at the rosters nothing really stood out pitching wise. A few of those guys went on to MLB careers, but in college they didn't light the world on fire. For example Brian Wilson.

I honestly believe the guy was asleep in the dugout about half the time. You could never tell behind those wayfarers he always wore.

I do know that I never saw him make a pitching change himself. Too lazy to get off his fat arse. Always sent Wiederhold out to make the switch. That was always a sign to me of just how disengaged he was.

my favorite smoke excuse "It was just bad baseball fortune"

He used that line CONSTANTLY. Oh we got drubbed 15-3 by USCe in the CWS? BAD BASEBALL FORTUNE

True story:

I saw Clay Dirks, Justin Meier, and a couple other guys I can't remember shite faced at Grits in NOLA on a thursday night. Apparently they had all just gone fishing that day. they had a weekend sec series at the box the next day

Makes two of us. I was there for the end of Skip's tenure, thankfully, but Smoke was a mess.

I must be the only lucky guy around here. Smoke left the year I graduated from HS.

I swear those dudes spent more time in bars than on the diamond. I hated my time in college going to baseball games with Smoke as the Coach. Exactly why when PM got here and got them to Omaha in 09 I was definitely going.

As I recall, Smoke could barely talk in an interview. Sonofabitch was outright stupid and was baseball's version of Curley Hallman - another stupid loser. To both of those idiots I offer my salute!

Just looked at his records at LSU and he went to two CWS and won a SEC regular season title Most schools they would be thrilled with that. Not al LSU

Liuzza was indeed one of them. The other guy they had was asleep in the truck.
