So Lewis Neal is at 7 sacks and Barkevious Mingo only had 4.5 his junior year

IIRC it was 2.5 sacks. He did have a bunch of TFL though.

Mingo was always in the backfield but he seemed to always over run the quarterback. He made a lot of plays on the edge with running backs trying to get outside but he was always too wide to get to the qb. Dude was too fast for his own good at times.

Neal is more controlled during his pass rush attempts and its resulting in a lot of sacks. Although, running backs can get outside of him a lot more than they could on mingo. Personally, I'll take the sacks because the linebackers are doing a good job not letting the running backs get outside this year.

I think this goes to the Coach O vs Brick discussion. Apparently when Hunter got to the Vikings, they tried to find out what he knew. Apparently all he had been taught was to run wide and as fast as possible and that was pretty much it.

Evidence is pretty damning for Brick.

Found a link:
quote:

"As soon as we drafted him, I made a cut-up of every single rush he had at LSU," the Vikings' defensive line coach said. "I had him come to my office, and I said, 'I want you to explain to me what you were being taught to do.' So we're sitting there, and he's explaining to me how they were teaching him to rush. Well, you run [a 40-yard dash in] 4.5 [seconds]. But you take off on the snap of the ball, and you run wide. Now, the offensive tackle just kicks back and waits on you. You might as well be running 4.9, 5-flat. And number two, I don't think he was exposed to how the offensive lineman was trying to pass protect against him. He was just out there, using his athleticism and trying to make something happen. The first thing I wanted to do was find out what he knew and why I was seeing what I was seeing."

to coach Eaux. Hopefully he's around long enough to stock the cupboard with his recruits. Once this happens, we will have the finest DL in the land.

Oh I agree that it was technique and coaching related for sure. If Orgeron had been here with mingo, Montgomery, Logan, and Brockers... Dear god.
