He said on 104.5 that he had to hire someone who had the maturity to withstand the "he's not Saban" talk.

In his 12 years in Baton Rouge, Les definitely checked that box. I can't imagine going through that. You win a NC, "it's with Saban's players." You go undefeated and get to another NC, but lose to Saban.

I think he has some of the toughest skin of any coach we've ever had.

2007 is a good year for that.

People, especially on here were hopping up and down for Ryan Perrilloux, Charles Scott and Keiland Williams(Miles recruits) to play over Jacob Hester, Matt Flynn (especially after Flynn sprained his ankle in the VT game.)

Miles started the players he wanted. He clearly didn't care about the Saban carry over. He started the players he thought were best

I don't know if it's because he started the players he thought were the best, but I know he's old school. Loyalty and seniority come into play.

Les Miles is a great man. We admire men who conquer enemies, who conquer mountains, who conquer in business. Les Miles did infinitely more; he conquered himself.

After being fired, "I'm for LSU." "I support the decision." What a great man!

Loyal to a "fault" unfortunately - the turndown of the Michigan job (as Skip confirmed)is a prime example of that. Our rantards were certain Michigan really didn't want him and that Miles would've jumped immediately if offered.

A dying breed!

Well if I really wanted to torture a fan base, that's what I'd do.

And all he had to do was hire competent coordinators and let them coach up the talent. Man wasted a helluva good gig with his stubborness.

in their defense, he had many opportunities to step out of that shadow but would follow it up with frick ups that would give rise to the doubters.

The recruiting argument about "Saban's Players" is about the dumbest criticism against Miles during his entire tenure.

The fact that so many people ran with this stupid idea is a big thing that helped Saban build Bama up to what it is. Saban got credit in recruiting for years of Miles coaching accomplishments while he was in the pros.

Nonsense...it is because Miles stunk up the place with his offensive offense. All this about what a wonderful man may or may not be accurate, but he was damn sure too f'n stubborn to do what everyone knew was the right thing to do.

That is why the man is no longer the head coach at LSU and has absolutely nothing to do with Saban either as a predecessor or an advisory.

He definitely checked a bunch of boxes. I really enjoyed the "behind the curtain" segment and all that it revealed, that many either already knew or assumed, in the hiring process of Les. I had always questioned how they picked him and why. Out of a phone book? Recommended? Did he kill the interview?

Cool stories from a legend. I wish he would do it again on some other topics.
