SI -Twelve Players Who Can Transform Their Teams From Contenders to Champions

DRAKE DAVIS, WR, LSU
For LSU to have any chance to unseat Alabama in the SEC West, offensive coordinator Matt Canada has to make sure opposing defenses can’t key on Derrius Guice the way they did on Leonard Fournette when Les Miles was coaching the Tigers. Canada found ways to get plenty of touches for players not named James Conner at Pittsburgh last season, and it made life easier on Conner and miserable for opposing defenses.
The 6' 4", 219-pound Davis is the son of former LSU basketball player Lester Earl. Davis started his athletic career as a soccer player and came to football later, and his size and speed are very intriguing. Canada wrecked defenses last year using Pitt’s Quadree Henderson as a jet sweep specialist (60 carries, 631 rushing yards). Davis is much bigger than the 5' 9", 190-pound Henderson, but could he play a similar role? Canada uses jet motion on nearly every play. If one of the Tigers’ receivers emerges as a reliable gainer on the play, it will force defenses to spread out and not load the box in anticipation of Guice carries.

I don't want to undervalue the importance of a number of positions on LSU's team -- but I can't help but feel that the difference between 8-4 and 11-1 is what we get from the QB position.

And on ESPN - The happiest -- and most miserable -- college football fan bases. LSU fans win in both categories.

LSU's QB and receiver positions, and pass protection, that will decide LSU's success in 2017.

Really, I almost remember that. But it didn't happen.

I completely get what you're saying but last year we set Offensive records with an injured Etling. If we get the same level as last year we'll be fine. I'm feeling we're going to get a lot more than last year.

Feel the same way, a far more diverse offense with highly skilled players across the board, how do you downplay that?

It pretty much all hinges on this and QB play.

Of course jet sweeps and deception can make the offense unpredictable and more effective, but why single out Drake Davis? LSU has numerous skilled athletes that could fill that role.

Because he's 6-4, 215, can run a 4.3, and isn't a name that has been repeated ad nauseam in the national media.

LSU Players Who Can Transform Their Team From Contenders to Champions
Jacoby Stevens
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Drake Davis
Darrel Williams
Derrius Guice
Derrick Dillon
Foster Moreau
Jacory Washington

They're all going to get touches in Canada's offense, called to catch passes. They all will have an opportunity to transform LSU from contender to champion.

Actually the guy who can transform the team sits in the middle of the D. His name is Devin White.

Actually the two guys who can transform the team sit in the middle of the offense and defense, respectfully.

We could have been easily 11-1 last year with etling. Lost every close game....not his fault Florida, and refs ruled at auburn after clutch late drive...with Les Miles...didn't play Wisconsin.

Nobody dominated LSU last year, if we had Canada last year, could have been 12-0!

You are correct. Can't throw w/o decent pass protection, and you can't throw effectively if WRs don't run the right routes and/or drop balls. If these items come together, respectably, our OFF should be balanced and keep us in every game for a W. Looking forward to seeing Etling run the OFF, now that he is healthy and more experienced.
