I think there is a misconception on what games will be on the SEC Network and their timeslots. Not just crappy non conference games will be televised on the channel. If you look now, A&M & South Carolina is the on the SEC Network. I can see more game like this being put on the channel to try to get viewership up and pressure those providers who have not yet made agreement with the network. Look at Longhorn Network as an example. They put UT's best non conference game against Ole Miss last season on their network.

With all this said, we don't even know the times games on the network will come on TV. It's not just replacing the 11:30 games. SEC Network will be great and by the launch all major providers will be on board. Can't wait.

Yeah, a Javi bashing would have been the better option.

SEC Network has said it will have 3 games on TV each Saturday (morning, afternoon, and night). Just guessing...you could extrapolate that to mean 11am, 2:30pm, and 6 or 7pm.

I thought about starting this thread. It amazes me how many people seemingly have no idea what this network will be like. It is a National sports network.
quote:

7. This is not the Longhorn Network. The much ballyhooed Longhorn Network has turned into an ESPN albatross. The reason? LHN has just two football games a year. The SEC Network will have 45. No one really wants the Longhorn Network. Hell, even Texas fans don't care that much about having access to it. Plus, even with Texas's substantial fan base, it's hard to get lots of anger stirred up. The SEC has 14 rabid fan bases that will demand to see these games. So eliminate all thoughts of the difficulty ESPN has had getting the LHN distributed. These are not the same issues at all.

quote:

8. How good will the games be on the SEC Network? They'll be good. In fact, I think three or four times in 2014 the SEC will put the second best game on the SEC Network in primetime. Why? For the same reason ESPN put Duke and North Carolina basketball on ESPN2 back in the day, to make the station a must-have product. When you look at weekly SEC schedules, there is a tremendous strength some weeks, the second and third games are nearly as good as the CBS telecast. ESPN will have the rights to all SEC football games with the exception of that first round pick for CBS. ESPN and the SEC will also be aware of the criticism that is sure to be levied, that the SEC Network's games won't be as attractive as the ones on CBS, ESPN, and ESPN2. Look for that argument to give up the ghost early. There will be really big games played on the SEC Network in its first year to make the channel a must-have for college football fans.

quote:

13. Can you put big out-of-conference games on the SEC Network? This is a fascinating question from a national distribution platform angle. Can you put, say, Florida State at Florida or Clemson at South Carolina or Oklahoma at Tennessee on the SEC Network? The home team's television package typically governs these games. That is, the road team appears on the home team's network. Let's say that Florida State and Florida is a top ten match-up. But it is the same weekend as Alabama and Auburn, so CBS picks Alabama and Auburn. Could you put big-time programs from out-of-conference on the SEC Network? I think so. Which means that the SEC is incentivized to play big national home-and-home games. Or to create their own neutral site games and have the SEC Network put those games on. It's something to think about going forward if the SEC Network truly wants to broaden its footprint. The SEC teams are incentivized to play big national games.

The question about the SEC Network is not content. It is going to be carriage. As far as I know, only DirecTV has officially signed on. There is still time for the rest, but the clock is ticking.

My guess is that if you have a provider who has rights on WatchESPN (such as Cox, who shows the Longhorn Network here in NOLA), then my guess is that they will get a deal in for the launch. The rest will probably take time.

So, there will no doubt be millions of TV viewers in SEC country who will not have the channel at launch and may not have it for several years. That's just how Cable TV works. CST never did make it onto Charter on the northshore so they didnt start getting the Pelicans until last year. Almost no one in Houston has access to Comcast Sports Houston, which means that the Astros and the Rockets have no local viewership beyond the one cable provider who shows it. NFL network only in the last few months made it into several homes in the NYC area. Bevo TV does not have wide distribution in the State of Texas. It even took YES Network years to get wide distribution in NYC.

So, be prepared...you may or may not have SEC Network this fall.

And then, some of you who do get it will be too stupid to find it.

Dish is the only one that has it now.

I would bet just about anything that Directv will have it before the season starts. and if they don't, you will be able to call them and get just about anything from them (NFL Sunday Ticket!).

Directv will hold out as long as they can, ESPN will probably not budge on their price, DTV will eventually suck it up and take the deal.
They are the largest provider outside of Comcast, who's about to become huge once they finish the buyout of Time Warner. Not sure, but Comcast is mostly in the Northeast. I'd bet DTV and Dish are the largest providers in SEC land.
DTV will have the SEC network, they are just being businessmen about the negotiations.

Dish and Att Uverse are the only big providers to sign on with the network so far. Direct Tv has not signed an agreement yet for the channel. I have a feeling though by the time the network launches in August most providers will carry the channel. Too valuable not to carry it.

Just my own prediction based off of nothing imparticular, but I think the content will really make it happen though. with 45 football games your pretty much ensuring that you will have 13 angry redneck fan basis (and 1 nerdy fanbase) calling up there provider. First few months (3-18 months) will be rough, but by end of year 2 I think I will be pretty solid.

I agree with this. It will probably be a 2 year process for many cable TV providers.

The fact that Dish was an early signee is astouding. Dish is usually the first provider to get into petulant catfights over carriage fees with networks.

DirecTV usually gets the job done. I would nto worry if I were a DTV person.

Those providers with WatchESPN access...they already have comprehensive deals with Disney so adding SECN to those deals should be pretty painless comparatively speaking.

Its the smaller providers out there that will take their time. They don't have the money that the bigger carriers do to pay ESPN's fees, and they are too small for ESPN to really care about them. As long as ESPN gets the SECN onto the big carriers, they will play the waiting game witht he smaller ones.

I would. The fact that Dish has been signed on for nearly two months and DTV has no deal yet is pretty telling. People keep assuming that they will get a deal done in time for launch.. but it makes sense to get it done now. Any DTV subscriber whose two year contract expires between now and SECN launch can easily make the switch to Dish and guarantee themselves that they will have the Network. DTV does not seem worried about this.

I think DTV is betting their NFL Sunday Ticket will keep their subscribers. I do think they will get the network.. but I am starting to believe that it will be weeks after it launches when they find out their free NFL Sunday Ticket won't make an acceptable substitute for SEC fans.

Realistically, has there been any movement on whether major cable networks would carry the SEC network. For example a Comcast or Verizon? I have RCN and thus no hope of getting it, but I'll switch in August if someone else does.

Pretty much every provider's stance is that they are "currently in negotiations."

ATT Uverse and Dish are the only ones on board.

Understand that both ABC & ESPN are Disney properties and by extension, all their sub-properties such as SEC Network in this case. Dish's recent contract with the Disney content contains some unprecedented new provisions which will no doubt be addressed when the other providers have their next contract renewals. A little "Googling" will reveal a lot of good information about the new Dish contract for anyone interested.

Damn. If you're with Comcast, be worried. This is from today:
Comcast fabricates a fake website posing as SEC fans

pretty good sign that negotiations are not going well
