SEC Leading the Way for Rules Changes in College Baseball

D-1 Baseball Article
The most important proposal is an expansion of the video review/instant replay procedures. Under the SEC’s proposed rule change, a coach would be granted one video challenge per game. Should the challenge succeed, the coach would have another to use later in the game. However, if it failed, he’d lose the ability to challenge another play the rest of the game. That would not preclude the umpire crew from initiating a video review.
Another interesting aspect of this proposal is the addition of a wireless ear piece in the catcher’s helmet to improve pace of play. Under this proposal, the pitch to be thrown would be relayed via the ear piece as opposed to through signs or numerical codes. Advocates of the rule change say this addition would decrease the time of games by 20-25 minutes, while some purists believe the rule goes too far, and more emphasis should be placed on teaching catchers to call their own games.

Perfect it's the way it should be.

I don't really like the second one. Stick to signs.

The whole point of signs is calling the pitch without the other team being able to know. Unless you just have a thing for stealing signs, I don't understand why this would be an issue.

Because signs are cool.
And stealing signs is cool too!

Makes sense, we care about college baseball much more than any other school.

Need to change the rules on how to determine home team in regionals. In game 1 the 1st seed should have the option to defer as visiting team against the 4 seed. Therefore you set up to be the home team in game 2. You're at an immediate disadvantage in game 2 even though you're the literal home team and higher seed

I don't mind it. There are still signs from the catcher to the pitcher. Calling pitches from the dugout doesn't happen in the majors. I think this is a positive change.

With the arm band and number system, there's no way to steal them anyway. I'm fine with the catcher getting an ear piece. Curious how it holds up in a game though. Foul balls off the mask and being thrown all over the place.

Keep it simple- You earn the host, you're the home team every game.

Stick to signs.

That is tough to do with the limited time you have with the players. It's not as simple as just calling a pitch. You have to know gameplan vs each batter that you could possibly face for a weekend. That's the reason the coach does it. He simply just has more time.
MLB teams trains catchers strictly on how to gameplan and call their own games in the minors and it takes years for most guys to learn.

It won't do anything for the game if it doesn't keep the batter in the box. Many times the catcher has the sign before the batter has his, and then he's got to adjust his gloves, take a practice swing, check his shoes, one more practice swing, finally back in the box.

NFL QB's have had miks in their helmets for a few years now and I don't recall many problems with them. Perhaps a similar set-up could be adapted for catchers.

Both rules make a ton of sense, especially like the communication to the catcher directly. It's an improvement to the game. Should speed things up quite a bit.

I would need to read the full rule before passing judgement on the ear piece. Would it only be on for a few seconds? If the ear piece is active throughout the pitch, then the bench could tell him things like "throw back to first" while he's focused on the pitch. That would give him a split second advantage on pick-off plays.
