While discussing this issue with another Rantard, I stumbled across this article. So much discussion has been made of the "style" of offense (or the type of QB for that matter). At the end of the day, I just want to win Nattys. I think Bama has shown the way. Kiffin's statements below, bring home the old adage that "wise men do what wise men do".

The article below, talks about how Kiffin consulted with Tom Herman (UH) and TCU in building Alabama's new look.

'Kiffin knows now that all schemes must evolve or suffer the consequences. "If we had tried to just do our offense from last year with Jake and the people that we have," he said, "I don't think we'd be as successful right now." Saban and Kiffin knew that after losing Sims and Cooper the Crimson Tide would essentially have to rebuild the offense from scratch. So, with encouragement from Saban, Kiffin visited Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie at TCU. Those two had taken the Horned Frogs from a pro-style outfit to an up-tempo spread team. Kiffin also visited Houston coach Tom Herman, who had befuddled Alabama's defense as Ohio State's offensive coordinator in last season's Sugar Bowl. Herman showed Kiffin how different motion concepts—particularly the "jet" motion that is a staple in the Buckeyes' and Cougars' offenses—can sometimes trick less-disciplined defenders into reading the wrong key and blowing their assignments. Kiffin visited Herman in Houston before spring practice. After the spring, Cougars staffers came to Tuscaloosa so that the coaches could compare notes again. This fall, the Tide made the College Football Playoff thanks to their adoption of some of the same concepts that knocked them from the playoff last season. Full Article

Agreed. But more impressed with Saban's willingness to change. One commentator mentioned today, that he doesn't just Coach what he expects, "but he adjusts to the moment". With all of his success, he could easily just stuck to the same old way.

You mean his 2nd loss ever. He's coaching Houston and has blown out both FSU and OU in 1.5 seasons.

His offense will always put up points. Match him with a great DC and more talent....

This was CLM

Ironic that it was Saban's system that CLM inherited, and his refusal to evolve (as Saban did) that got him fired.

I know LOL

Tom kissing his players before each game rubs me a little

Nick is crazy football smart but plays big boy football and that is my only concern about Herman

He has not coached against enough Big Boy football teams for me to have that fill for him. Houston plays who ???

He could be the next big thing but I am not sold on him yet and if CEO is not our next coach I don't have a clue. 99% of everyone I know want Herman and you guys I am sure know what you are talking about.

This why getting Tom was important at the end of last season. He has had one more season to show his worth and a lot of universities want him.

Now LSU may be in a bidding war or He now has more jobs to pick from.

End of November was the time to pursue him. I think LSU missed its window of opportunity on him.

Why would a man many of the players probably look at as another father figure that is very close to his team rub you a little because he kisses his players in a non sexual manner?

Those players would jump off a cliff for Herman. Our players were ready to throw Miles off of one.

I'm not advocating him as candidate. I will point out that he coached against plenty "big boys" as Ohio State's OC/QB Coach (Same at Iowa State). But I'm more focused on perhaps the greatest college football coach ever, thought enough of him (as well as TCU) to build his new look.

Yep. Hind sight is 20/20. I still think that with the talent that we have, and continue to recruit, whoever the next guy is, needs to take a page out of the Saban book. NOBODY knows it all. If Saban could humble himself enough to seek help from Herman, I'm hoping the next guy (Orgeron, Jimbo, whomever) will have that same open mind. Its been said that Saban "hates to lose, far more than he likes to win." This article is an example of a Zebra changing his stripes because he does not plan to lose!!!

He is, hands down, the best college coach ever. Bear did it with no scholarship limits, no recruiting bylaws, before desegregation, before every team was on TV every Saturday. Bowden, Spurrier, Paterno all aren't even on the same planet.

adapt or die is the moral of the story

the right adaptations that fit the personnel on hand is the guidance of the story

execution degenerates if you do not counter opponents scheming (with adaptations) is the warning
