After watching a few of there games on film, here are my thoughts.

OFFENSE

QB - not a great arm but decent enough to move the ball. Deceptive foot speed. He won't get much over the top on our defense, but can have success with underneath throws.

RB - they use a few backs, no real game breakers. Big guys who run hard and will be good in goal line and short yardage situations.

Oline - Big boys!! Left Tackle is a good one in any conference. The rest lack athletism but they play together pretty well. They will struggle with D Hunter and his speed on the outside.

TE - great blockers, useful around the goal line. Not a huge threat to score from a distance, but all around solid.

WR - they have good size but that's where it ends for them. They aren't very fast at all. They don't have great hands and struggle against bump and run coverage.

DEFENSE

DLine - big! ( seeing a trend here ) they play the run well and are pretty tough to move out of their gaps. They will struggle to catch AJ in the pocket and can be be gashed on the outside.

LBs - not very fast . Struggle in pass coverage. Our tight ends and Landry could have a field day.

DBs - not very athletic in the defensive backfield. They lack speed and play making ability. I think our WRs could beat them off the line 9/10 times. We will have a chance to gain yards in huge chunks if they don't give much cushion.

PREDICTION

If we stick to our advantages and use our speed on this team, the outcome will be very good for the Tigers. They can't keep up with our athletes, but the are fundamentally sound and play very well within there scheme. They won't score quickly. If we come out slow on offense, they have the ability to grind out 14 play drives and use up a ton of clock. I think OBJ will take a punt or kick back in this one. Our offensive line will need to be ready for a battle in the trenches and our linebackers will have to have there game faces on as well. I just don't see us falling behind in this one and if it did happen, we can score points in bunches if need be.

Tldr?

11. Outback Bowl (Jan. 1, Tampa, Fla.) - Iowa (8-4) vs. LSU (9-3): If you think the Fight Hunger Bowl sounds incredibly entertaining, this is its opposite. LSU will likely keep it close to the vest with Anthony Jennings at quarterback in place of the injured Zach Mettenberger. Close to the vest is Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz's football life philosophy.

Per Yahoo sports..ranked the game #11 out of all bowl games..

The OP rundown looked like every single bowl game Iowa has been to.

Iowa= big, slow, un-athletic...

I'm not saying Iowa will definitely win but I think some of the LSU fans might want to slow down on the rhetoric a bit.

Iowa is 4-1 vs SEC in bowl games.....(counting most recent Missery bowl game)

I wouldn't discount Iowa's LB's either. Likely the best group of LB's in the country. If not right up there. 2 of the 3 will play on Sundays and wouldn't surprise me if all 3 do.

This is all I need to know: whats the average weight of the O-Line and D-Line?

How often do they send pressure and do they attack from the outside or inside.

What is Iowa's base coverage.

Since when do we use the TE as an offensive weapon? Seriously though, if Mett was playing, I really like our chances in this game. AJ may do a great job, but I have a feeling that he won't be throwing the ball very much. If he does, it's probably because Iowa has been able to shut down our running game. If that happens, things could get very interesting. I expect a very conservative offensive game plan from LSU.

It's not that Iowa is big and slow, they are just slower than what we are used to. There is no denying that the style of football in the B1G and SEC are different. We rely much more on speed and not brute strength. Our linebackers are very quick and geared to stop spread offenses in most cases. Schematically we can use that same size and come up with a gameplan to be effective against power teams as well. I'm not saying that we will blow Iowa out in a romp, but the potential is there. 7 in a row is not a fluke

By the spelling and context, I think you mean 'well within that there scheme'.

The last thing we need to do is go conservative. Big, slow Iowa, use our speed, Jennings is going to filet this bird. Hill and Magee need a crease and they are gone on defenses with speed, what the hell will Iowa do? They have no game tape of Jennings, remember what we did in 08? JJ threw the ball 25 times even though he only played like the last 3 games and we were running all over them. Get in some option, go three, four wide most of the day and beat these dudes asses and keep going til 5 minutes left and we are up 20-30 points.

Most of the past 15 years Iowa sat in a 4-3 cover 2 (zone) and didn't blitz much at all. Plain vanilla. It worked well for the most part.

Iowa has always had a good defense and most games were decided by less than 2 TD's.

With the advent of the spread/read option etc....they had to recruit leaner, faster OLB's and they have slowly started blitzing more and more.

Against Nebraska, they destroyed the QB the entire 2nd half with various blitzes from all over. It was a thing of beauty.

I imagine we will see quite a bit of pressure applied to try and confuse and pressure a young QB.

HOWEVER, If they are more worried about his feet than his arm, which is a very legitimate concern, they may choose to sit back in coverage and try to contain up front. Trying to keep him from breaking out of the pocket for big gains on busted plays. That is something Iowa has struggled with in the past so maybe, just maybe we try to pressure him and hope they can stop him before he gets going

I'm guessing LSU throws quite a few 3 step drop bombs to keep or safeties back..

I honestly think we will do everything we can to get your safeties to cheat up and go over the top. I think your DBS will struggle to contain arguably the best WR combo in college football

The question will be whether Jennings has the time or ability to find them. Typically the Iowa defense has played to not give up big plays, but due to less of a pass rush from the DL, we have had to do more blitzing than in past years. This has lead to some bigger pass plays than usual, but our blitzing has been more effective in the last half of the season, so those bigger plays haven't happened with nearly the frequency they were earlier in the year.

This Iowa team has improved more and more as the season has gone on. You are seeing a different team than the one that lost to MSU, OSU and Wisconsin. It will help immensely to have a fresh Mark Weisman running the ball. He takes (and gives) so much contact when he runs that he really got nicked up as the conference season wore on.
