Referee rule interpretation question

I was always told that a ball that travels more than ten yards on a kickoff is a live ball.
Maybe this has been previously addressed, but during the SEC championship game, Bug Eyed Tom Ritter and his crew broke their necks in an effort to blow the ball dead if it crossed into the end zone on kickoffs. Is this something that happens regularly or is it a new rule?

I believe it is still a live ball if it travels into the endzone, but it would seem very improbable to recover an "onsides kick" in the other teams endzone, So maybe its an effort to speed up the game or maybe hurry to get to a TV timeout.

Once a kickoff lands on the ground in the end zone in college, it's a touch back. If it is caught it can be run out. This is different from the NFL.

medtiger educates rookies. Good job.

If a receiving team player does pick up the ball in the endzone on a kickoff, he still must kneel the ball or step out of bounds for it to be a touchback.

Are you sure about this? I've seen instances where a player will drop a kickoff, the ball hits the ground, the player picks it up and starts running, but the ref blows it dead as a touch back.

been a long time, circa 76-77, TS, v. FSU, we kicked off, ball either bounced, or maybe fumbled in EZ, FSU returner hesitated, took a step out of EZ to about the 1yd line, went back in to EZ and took/tried to take a knee, and was leveled, was ruled a safety

I think that video is different from what is being discussed here. In that case, the player "fumbled" (i.e. dropped) the ball. He didn't muff it. And I think most refs would've blown that dead when he started acting lackadaisical, but I could be wrong.
