Recap: LSU 64, South Carolina 58

To say LSU controlled this game would be a lie. The pace favored South Carolina. The rebounds favored South Carolina. However, when it comes down to crunch time, LSU has learned how to win the close games.
LSU pulled out a 64-58 victory over the Gamecocks by using a late 12-2 run to end the game. It was the slowest paced game of the year for the Tigers (64 possessions), yet LSU was able get some timely fast break buckets as well as some key shots helped LSU score just enough. LSU broke the 1 point possession barrier for the 7th time in the last 9 games. Interestingly enough, the LSU's two SEC losses were LSU's <1PPP games.
Martin and Mickey continued to fill out the box score. Jarell Martin scored 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, had 3 assists, and a career high 6 blocks (previous high was 3). Mickey had 14 points, 6 assists, and 6 blocks. Keith Hornsby (15) and Tim Quarterman (16) joined them as double figure scorers. LSU was without freshman guard Jalyn Patterson in this one, who sat with an undisclosed injury.
LSU shot 50% from 2 point range, 35.7% from 3 point range and 78.9% from the FT stripe. They had a season high 13 blocks and only committed 13 team fouls.
The win pulls LSU back into a 4 way tie for second place in the SEC at 5-2. LSU is tied with Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas A&M just 1.5 games behind SEC leading Kentucky. LSU's KenPom ranking moved from 35th to 34th, LSU's best of the season, with the win. Their ESPN BPI moved to 33rd and their RPI moved to 36.
Next, LSU goes on the road to play Mississippi State, a team that nearly knocked off Ole Miss last night, before heading back to Baton Rouge for a big three game home stretch that includes Auburn, Alabama, and Kentucky.

You da man Thanks for the recap. Seems like every game we see these guys play, they are growing up right before our eyes. With Patterson being out our guard depth really hurt. Gray was really struggling last night. I'm still holding out hope that the game will start clicking for him soon, but his transition over to the SEC hasn't been kind.

I was super happy that Gray hit that 3 and 2 in back to back possessions late in the game. He didn't have a great game, but he didn't blow it either.
Overall it was a tough grind-it-out game and it was great to come out with a win.

Another gutsy win! Hopefully they have Patterson back Saturday. Need to go take care of business in Starkville.

Loved the way the game ended. 2+ minute standing ovation as the final seconds ticked off

Thanks SOS, just the positive plays Gray made last night can help him in the long run. He needs some confidence back, the kid has had a rough month.

Based on him whiffing on those backdoor cuts late, this is close to debatable.

minor typo in second to last paragraph, arky instead of UK

That really was a tough spot. I honestly think Jones should have gone zone there. The guy either steps out to the three point line and takes a shot alone, or cuts back to the basket for a layup. Luckily Hornsby bailed him out. Still think the biggest points of the game were his stepback 3 and the bank off the glass right after.

We played like poop, but won which the validity of that being a good thing can be debated. Quarterman has been the GEAUXT lately!
Glad we are taking care of business. Everything is in front of us!
WIN AND GET IN!!

What's the word on if Patterson comes back for Moo St. You can see how much we missed him in our late game substitutions. We usually sub Patterson for Gray in late game offense for defense. In recent years we lose games like last night.

When Jones was asked this after the game, he said they would get with the doctor before then and see. He didn't really give a lot of information on the injury.

Rosetta mentioned in an article on NOLA.com that Patterson was out with concussion symptoms. He looked fine on the bench last night - hopefully the docs will give him the go-ahead.

This. TBH I predicted we'd lose last night just because LSU basketball. It's a new day.

Thanks for the addition! Jones just said he got pretty knocked up in the post game presser.
Hoping he can be available.
