Let's assume Martin leaves and Mickey returns.
Johnny Jones roster should include the following:
Mickey - SEC blocks leader
Quarterman - lock down defender on verge of SEC star status
Hornsby - Gutsy player, underrated defender, sharp shooter
Gray - struggled at times but great ball-handling ability and a solid passer. Needs to quit trying to score at the rim.
Robinson & Malone - 7 footers, valuable commodities off the bench, should develop into useful pieces.
Victor - TONS of ability, should fit in well in our scheme and grab lots of boards.
Patterson - will play lots of valuable minutes, great shooter down the stretch and handles the ball well. team player.
Simmons - Guy has every tool you could hope for. His job will be to score and he will do it.
Blakeney - 6'4" penetrating guard. Can finish in traffic and shoots it well enough.

I think five of those names are upperclassmen. I know for sure two of them are NBA lottery picks. One is a returning All-SEC selection and Hornsby is a sharp-shooter in every sense of the word. Quarterman is poised to break out as a star. Not to mention, their is still the possibility of adding Malik Newman into the mix.

With all of that said, in my opinion anything short of the Elite 8 next year is a failure. Just bored at work and want to get the opinions of some of you guys.

Just so incredibly dumb and typical of the Rant. To say anything short of the elite 8 is a "failure" is absolutely fricking ridiculous. It takes so much to be able to get that far into the tourney. Anything can happen in the tournament.

People expected a lot when we had Chris Jackson, Shaq and Stanley Roberts, but Shaq and Stanley were freshmen. Tough to expect a lot with freshmen. Look how much more dominant UK is with some of their freshmen hanging around another year.

If Martin and Mickey returns, top 5 in the nation. Martin gone for sure though. There may be some attrition too.

I'm going to tell you this, and I mean it with absolute sincerity, if a roster with the players you listed above does not at least make the Sweet Sixteen then Jones needs to be fire.

There will be no excuse for inexperience, lack of athleticism, depth (except for the front court), etc.

I'm not too confident in this team's ability to advance to the Elite 8 just yet, but they damn sure better win multiple games in the tournament next year.

We are entering a stretch of 4-5 years where LSU will have very competitive talent, but will generally underachieve. I like Jones and really wish he was the perfect fit because he truly loves the program and would stay here until he wants to retire. Unfortunately, he lacks several qualities: (i) ability to manage a bench, (ii) game day and situational coaching, (iii) keeping players focused and motivated, (iv) general X and O's and (v) his players seem to lack court awareness/basketball IQ at key times. I'm not trying to bash a coach, yes I know his record has gotten better every year, but so has his talent level. But we are simply not getting the most out of the talent we have. There was a reason no other school came to get him out of the Sunbelt Conference for 11 years.

Get ready for an exciting, but very frustrating stretch.

I truly don't think Elite 8 is unrealistic. We will have FIVE experienced guys on our team, unquestioned leadership with Mickey and Hornsby and Quarterman (assuming Mickey's back), plenty of scoring to go round and we will go 8-9 deep. We should be a 3-4 seed next year with a great shot at winning 3 games in the tourney.

if M and M come back

adding Simmons, Antonio, and Newman would make us a top 10 team

it's final four or bust with those guys because that window is only open for a year

Next year is our year, no doubt. With the talent coming in, there's no doubt we make it to at least the Elite Eight. No way, no how. I trust in Coach Jones to build on the experience from this year. Adversity builds character, and this team just gained a whole lot of character!

That's a top 5 team. We are getting a generational talent in simmons.

I think we end up seeded 3-4 with a record around 26-6. While I'm extremely hopeful I refuse to allow myself to expect a 1 seed or some incredible 29-3 run. We'll lose a few we shouldn't.

Not sure it matters how great our talent is unless the coaching improves. Exactly what offense were they running the last 8-10 minutes in this game as well as against Auburn in the SEC tourney? How do you not hit a single bucket, or free throws, for the last several minutes of TWO games in a row? Jones looked incredibly nervous and confused, at the end of both games, and I think his doubt/tension spread to his players and manifested itself into bad play. I like Jones but I think his mental approach to closing out games has to improve on an Xs and Os front as well as how he carries himself in front of his players.

Expecting a particular round in a single elimination tournament as a bench mark for expectations is a real sign of a moron.

I hope LSU doesn't lose at home to a single +100 RPI school, and doesn't lose more than 1-2 bad teams on the road. That and finishing top 3 in the league.
