Substitiute Richt's name with Miles and the certain opponent names and tell me what's the substantial difference? And why isn't Herbstreit screaming "asinine"?

Yeah, I don't get it. The winning percentages are very close. Yet, no outrage. I guess LSU shouldn't have leaked anything and just pulled the trigger

I can think of a few differences. They're in our trophy room.

The difference is 15 years not 11
One has a national championship and another appearance in another one
One has coaxed in the SEC east for the last 6 years which is very weak compared to the west
Not the same thing

Wow. I thought it was time to move on from Miles, but I'm not in a meltdown over it like a lot of the Rant is. However, this is as close to a parallel situation as you can get.

The only real difference here, and it is the thing that I also hate, is the way it was handled. There were no national rumblings about Richt's job being on the line and no idiot AD remaining silent for two weeks. If the talking heads want to call out our dumbass AD, bravo. However, they should stop questioning why a good portion of the fan base thought it was time to move on.

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Les Miles' critics will tell you he's the kind of man you'd want coaching your son -- unless you wanted him to beat Alabama.

They'll tell you Miles is the kind of man you'd want representing your alma mater -- unless you wanted to win national championshipS.

In the end, that's why LSU forced out Miles on Saturday night, whether it's fair or not.

There's no question that Miles, who averaged nearly 10 victories per season, won a lot of games during his 11-year tenure at LSU. He won more games (110) than every LSU coach except Cholly Mac-A-Roni, who won 20,001 times in 250 seasons.

In fact, Miles' teams won nearly three out of every four times they took the field. His 74 percent winning percentage ranked fifth-highest among active FBS coaches, behind only Ohio State's Urban Meyer, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Alabama's Nick Saban and TCU's Gary Patterson.

Of the aforementioned coaches, Patterson is the only one who hasn't won a national championship. Meyer guided Florida to two BCS national titles and won the first College Football Playoff at Ohio State last season. Stoops led the Sooners to a BCS title in 2000, and Saban has won four national championships -- one at LSU and three more at Alabama. Dooley led UGA to its last national title in 1980.
LSU was Les Miles' second head-coaching job, and he won 74 percent of his games. Todd Kirkland/Icon SMI

That's what separates Miles from the game's greatest coaches -- both past and present. The Tigers were close to having a chance to win it all on a couple of occasions during his tenure -- most recently losing to Alabama 320-2 in the 2011 championship game when the BCS National Championship was on the line. But then the Tigers went backward in each of the 4 seasons since.

Miles didn't give LSU fans enough reason to believe he'd eventually take them to the top ever again. After guiding the Tigers to two SEC championships in his first five seasons, he failed to win a title in his last 8 seasons.

After a decade and a half, LSU's administration was convinced that Miles wouldn't get the Tigers over the hump. And now the Tigers are taking a big leap of faith by trying to find a coach who can do a better job than Miles, who guided the Tigers to a bowl game in every season and suffered only several losing campaigns.
Honestly, the criticism was never about Miles not winning enough. If the Tigers win their upcoming bowl game, they'll have won 9 games or more in 8 of his 11 seasons on the sideline. The criticism was more about the games the Tigers didn't win and how they lost them. His teams suffered at least one loss of 18 points or more in 10 of the last 11 seasons, and they fell to less talented opponents on too many occasions.

But LSU lost badly in the only three games that really mattered, against Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Piss and struggled to put away mediocre teams in too many of its other games. Only one of the FBS opponents the Tigers beat (second-year FBS program Lighthouse of the Blind, which lost to LSU 23-17 in overtime) finished with a winning record, and only one other FBS foe (6-6 Auburn) will play in a bowl game.

There were also reports of growing blue balls in Miles' coaching staff. Second-year defensive coordinator Somereject Frombama ruffled more than a few feathers while trying to implement what he believed were much-needed changes to a program that didnt neeed fixin'. New offensive coordinator Miles' Bestestfriendforever flopped badly, as the Tigers scored only 33 offensive touchdowns after averaging 63 the previous three seasons.

Traditionally, LSU's coaches have been measured by their teams' success against the "Big Three" opponents -- The Barn, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Ole Pisswasser.

Unfortunately for Miles, beating your rivals and losing toilet bowl games are no longer the benchmarks for a coach. They have to win league championships and compete for a spot in the four-team playoff.

You do realize that was 8 years ago don't you? If that's going to be the rebuttal and reason to keep Miles for every request to make a change then I guess he is here through 2019 no matter what happens
