Ranking the Top 10 LSU Shortstops since 1990

I know there has been a lot of discussion about this lately, so I figured we could have a thread to discuss it. My rankings:
1. Russ Johnson - Johnson hit .410 his last season in the pre-juiced bats era. He had 32 home runs in 3 seasons. He had 74 rbi's in his last season and was a stud fielder.
2. Brandon Larson - Only played one season at LSU, but hit 40 hr and had 118 rbi. Also had a .381 batting average. If he played more than a year, he would be #1.
3. Austin Nola - The best fielding short stop of the bunch. His hitting was less than most on here, but he still hit .320 his sophomore season.
4. DJ Lemahieu - Lemahieu was moved to second base once Austin Nola took off at short stop, but he was an excellent short stop and is a MLB gold glover. Hit .336 and .350 in the regular seasons at LSU and hit .444 in the CWS.
5. Jason Williams - Played on Team USA. Hit .340 his senior year. Very consistent as a 4 year starter.
6. Aaron Hill - Seems forgotten at times, but was a stud with a .358 BA his junior year and 9 home runs.
7. Alex Bregman - Hitting .318 this year with 9 home runs. One of the better fielders as well and a team leader.
8. Ryan Theriot - Not much power at all, but did hit .353 in his final season at LSU. Towards the top of the fielding rankings as well.
9. Blake Gill - Very versatile fielder. .316 career batting average.
10. JC Holt - Holt played some different positions, but was a nice short stop. .322 batting average for his career.

You put way too much stock in hitting stats. Why not list defensive stats too?

Ive watched Bregman and Nola and maybe im caught in the now, but I believe Bregman is better. Depending on how Bregman ends his run, I would put him either 3 or 4 behind RJ, Larson and Hill.

I always leaned towards Jason Williams as the best ever. Part of two National Champions, one of the great clutch hitters in LSU history, and an absolute Hoover at his position.
But Bregs? Bregs is friggin' Ozzie Smith out there.

Nola way too high

Bregman's postseason woes hurt him. If he destroys the Supers and CWS I would put him #1 overall IMO.

I'm not sure what the correct order is, but this isn't it...

Andy Sheets nowhere on it? Started shortstop for Padres in a World Series.

One thing I don't see people considering in these "lists" is the trend for top flight pitchers going to college rather than the minors. This is a good thing in my opinion, but it is not the same anymore when top teams have an entire pitching staff that is breaking 90. Ben McDonald was remarking on TV early this year that it has gone from a couple guys who pitched that hard to everyone on LSU's staff being able to pitch that hard.
This seems true in the field as well. The only guys that are still going pro are the power guys. Seems like all of our power hitting recruits go pro.
Oh well, that is my 2 cents on the topic. I just think it is very hard to compare eras. If I do chose to compare, I try to focus upon comparing a player to his contemporaries. Lets face it, every player with an official at bat hit a HR back in Larson's year. We struggle to get anyone with more than 10 HR now.

what a terrible list
blake gill? played like 20 games of SS in 4 years
austin nola # 3
jason williams, aaron hill and lehmaieu over bregman is the best part though

Not at LSU, he didn't. Hill started 114 games at short and was the SEC Player of the Year in 2003. Like many college shortstops, he was moved to 2nd once he got the pros.
Hill and Bregman are both ranked way too low. Hill was SEC PoY and Bregman is a potential Golden Spikes winner.

Hill, Breg, Larson, and Johnson should prolly be the Top 4 in some fashion.

Nola too high.. DJ way too high. Bregman way too low. Hell Skip said he was the best.

On what planet is Nola better than the guys you have behind him on the list.

No kidding. I did not expect to see him on the list to be honest.
