From what I've seen over the years, the most under-rated QB was Mike Hillman. He QB'd one of LSU's all-time great teams. They lost recognition when Notre Dame picked the same year to begin playing bowl games again and LSU was passed over and "awarded" the Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston, which the team rightfully declined.

As far as the QB who, when he dropped back for a pass and wound up, you knew would complete the pass, the winner was Tommy Hodson for several years, Bert Jones his last year, and Rohan his last year.

The best QB performances that I can recall at this moment were Bert Jones (to Andy Hamilton) against Notre Dame and Rohan Davey against Alabama.

We've had some good ones.

Isn't it ironic that we have a better offense this year after losing the #1 nfl draft pick at QB and 2 first round receivers?

no, not at all. A new OC and 6 overtimes will do that to your stats. RP ran the offense just as good as Flynn.

Matt Mauck has to be in the mix. 19-2 as a starter, 2 SEC Titles, and a National title. A Better career than most.

You have the winner! Stat's are always important but bring home the hardware!

so please tell us your point. You said hardware is all that matters....even if the defense leads the way.

wins/titles are a function/stat of teams

records shouldn't be used for/against individual players

I would agree with all of this but Stokley's performance versus Wyonming was classic. LSU's duo versus #2 Arkansas 1966 was classic.

but the cream of the crop easily was:

Mike Miley 1973 verus Ole Miss! Colorado & USC (Carolina-Dietzel)

Mauck was average at best. His erratic passing caused Saban to reign in offense against Ole Miss and Oklahoma in '03.Tiger defense won the Natl. title.

I will never understand Mauck's name even being mentioned in these kinds of threads. Sometime after we won the title, history got rewritten to make him an excellent QB.

Slow Flow Pro - I understand your point. My point is that Matt M. had decent stat's. Look at his interception vs completion ratio. He wasn't all world as a qb but he played within himself. He is not Dilfer!! PLEASE

I am not saying he is the best qb to have ever played at LSU. We should give him credit for being special to have achieved what the team did.

You are 100% correct that football is a team sport but the qb is the primary leader.

I agree. Also comparing different time periods turns the debate into personal preferences.

because we played like 14 games that year so he had more stats, and people forget his big game meltdowns

oh and he's not just an excellent QB now, he's an all-time great CFB QB now

Also JR had a much easier schedule in 05... what happened there besides Katrina? I know the team was tired, but JR put the team in bad spots quite often. We would not have needed his miracle comebacks if he had not gotten us in that spot.

he had a badly injured wrist almost the whole season and he was the 1st qb in a long time to beat a top 5 team on the road (he did it twice). He was great against the best defense LSU has played since OU in 2003 (alabama in 2005). Actually, addai was the key to our offense that year. When he was healthy our offense played great because Jimbo's scheme needs the playaction. That is why our offense struggled at times last year. We always moved the ball through the air almost at will, but Jimbo always wanted to establish the running game so we could get some big plays
