Why doesn't football facilities like Tiger Stadium have a tarp system like baseball?

Alleva cries about player safety and field conditions when making huge decisions. He admitted a factor was blanking the crew had to get the field "ready"

It literally takes 5 minutes for a crew to roll a tarp system in place when teams aren't on the field.

It just seems stupid on rainy days or situations like Saturday to just let it poured on the surface and subject the players to even worse conditions.

It wasn't about rain. It was about lightning.

It's an artificial surface with a drainage system.

He attributed the safety concerns to what the trainers and team doctors were telling him. None of the player had eaten anything in hours plus fatigue was setting in for them all. Add in a wet field and injuries were going to happen.

Not a post about Saturday. It's a post about horrible conditions and leaving our field exposed.

As for Sat, yes it was lightning. But when considering resuming play, filed conditions were a factor. A very avoidable factor, IMO

But on weekends, if you are 100% chance of rain on Friday/Saturday, why not have a tarp protecting the field?

LSU has an underground system that drains all the water from the field. They were not talking about player injuries due to wet field. They were talking about injuries due to players not warming up properly before resuming play. The field was completely dry.

So you're saying it's not a good idea to protect the field in heavy rain conditions prior to the game or in any type of delay?

Excellent thought moron

Fair question

Tarp is not a practical option for football. If it's just rain, the game will be played (and the field will be torn up). No use for a tarp there.

If the game is not played, the field gets soaked... it's grass. Grass likes water. We've had 2 evenings of storms, and my guess is that the field is in great shape right now.
Conversely, if you left it covered with a tarp for a tay or two, the grass would be looking crappy.

lay a blue tarp out on your lawn for a couple days, and then go look at it. Bet it won't look as good as your neighbor's...

Baseball tarps are for the dirt, not the grass. Good fields (such as ours) have very advanced drainage systems that make rain a non-issue.

there is no place to put a tarp given all the equipment around the perimeter of the field. Tarps in baseball are used to protect the dirt in the infield.

You don't think there would be extreme, unusual fatigue by playing at 2am? The team probably began getting ready for the game a little after lunch time Saturday and would have ended the game around 2-3 am. That's insane and not worth it.

LSU's playing surface has one of the most advanced drainage systems. I still don't see how putting a tarp over the field Saturday night would have done anything to alleviate the lightning...I guess I'll hang up and listen.

Edit: LSU vs Auburn 2013 (Game played) 4.67" of rain
LSU vs McNeese St. 2015 (Game not played) 0.60" of rain

Absolutely false. Alleva (or Miles) said there was also special consideration given to the time needed for the crew to get the field ready to resume play. Fatigue combined with a soaked field was a consideration of player safety.

Before you keep spouting, I know TR who owns the company in charge of the field resurfacing at all grass complexes. We spoke yesterday. His opinion does not sync with your views her. I'll take his thoughts over yours. Yes, it TS drains well, but the top layer of sod/gras is 1- 1.5" and is comprised of soil the will stay wet for an extended period of time.

And as for as baseball, I know it protects the dirt, but they do it to protect the entire infield, which is where 90% of the actions takes place. They don't just cover the dirt.
