Quick question for the older Tiger fans about recruiting

My LSU recruiting knowledge only dates back to about 10 years ago, and Rivals only goes back to 2002. So I'm wondering how talent rich Louisiana as a state was before that. Has it always been a heavily recruited state?

Ask the coaches at Florida, Miami and Florida State circa late 80s and early 90s. They'll give a ringing endorsement.

Hell even the coaches at schools like Colorado and Nebraska too.

In short: as long as there has been football, there has been good stock in Louisiana. Sunshine and genetics and shite.

We go 50 years without winning a national title.
We lock down recruiting in LA....
We win 2 titles and play for another.

Very. Started following in 94-95. Google Parade All Americans, USA Today all Americans. Back then, we had recruiting annuals. Magazines. Forrest Davis and Jeff Whittaker recruiting annuals. Were dedicated to the south. Davis was a Bama homer but had a solid publication. Whittaker's annual had a larger write up/bio and photographs. Any older poster on here, like myself, could drone on for hours about highly touted La players that not only started in college and the NFL, but also burned out or were "busts".

Peyton Manning, Josh Booty, Warrick Dunn, Eric Jefferson, Neil Smith, Derrick Joseph, Ed Reed, Reggie Wayne, Thomas Pittman, Ernie Badeaux, Travis Minor, Brandon Jacobs, Adam McConathy, Brock Berlin, Cecil Collins, Bradie James, etc, etc.

I remember that we never really did that well in North La.( Evangel and West Monroe) ie. Joe Ferguson and lost good talent out of inner city New Orleans.

Dinardo finally made north la (my neck of the woods) a priority...Saban went ocd recruiting north la and got who he wanted.

yes
very much so and many a big school like FSU had a field day in Louisiana year after year - Nick was the coach followed by Les that put the fence up

Korell Steward, Peyton Manning, Warrick Dunn, Marshall Faulk, Ike Hilliard, Reggie Wayne, and Ed Reed would have made the 90s at LSU a lot different.

Up until Stovall showed up there was hardly any interest in Recruiting. There was Blue Chip Magazine but those players did not go to LSU. Hap Glaudi started having Forrest Davis and Max Emfinger on his show. Also Tiger Rag Magazine started and they were big on Recruiting. Back then there were two Signing Days the First Saturday in December and the First Wednesday in February. The First Saturday in December was binding in the SEC, ACC, some Independents. The SWC did not participate and would go after the players that LSU signed. Then one year Stovall had a Top Ten Class and that was unheard of in those days. After the Signing Days you would run to get the Advocate and Times Picayune to see who LSU signed.

Michigan and Ohio State even got in on the act in NOLA.
LSU couldn't buy recruits from there.

I swear, I think Bobby Bowden had an office at Catholic High in the 90s.

i used to pick up forrest davis' annual blue chip mag.
i think the first one i got was marvin jones, or maybe it was eric zier as the number one recruit in the country.
i remember when hallman signed the top rb from la, ms and al in one year. a year after that, davis went back to al to play for auburn and moore went back to ms to play for ole miss.

To be fair. Dinardo started it. Saban perfected it and Les continued the gig

who knows what would have happened if dinardo tried to keep carl reese instead of letting mack brown steal him away to texas.
he could've at least fired tepper, but w/e.

I know for a long time Louisiana and Mississippi ranked as having the highest amount of NFL players per capita.

I saw my first LSU game in 1957 and I can tell you that Louisiana has always been talent-rich. During Charles McClendon's time as coach, the vast majority of the players were from LA with and occasional Texas player being signed. L.S.U. did not recruit "nationally" like we do today.
The Tigers did lose a lot of top talent (Tommy Wilcox and Terry Davis to Alabama, Joe Ferguson to Arkansas, Warrick Dunn and a ton others to F.S.U.) are just a few that I can recall.
