Question regarding the o-line (legit)
Posted by lsuguy13 on 9/30/12 at 9:09 pm00
K so coming out of high school wasn't lae'l collins the best OT in America and said he was athletic and had great feet. With faulk out, why not put collins @ LT the position he or so i thought was being groomes for and put josh D back to wheee he played before, left guard.

The reasoning that Miles and coaches have given is that Collins is making progress at guard and he best suits the team at the position. I guess they see it as a continuity issue?
IMO Collins could be a force at LT

I think had he practiced at tackle even a little bit in the spring, and again in the fall, it might be a possibility. But in the middle of the season, I think it'd be a stretch to ask him to switch from G to T. And another thing, he's been very good at G...with the possible exception of last night.
This makes too much sense for the coaches to try. Collins was probably one of the top two or three offensive linemen in the nation as a high school senior--good enough to not redshirt like most true frosh OL last season. He was a LT all through high school, apparently, so it should not be a tough learning curve or adjustment.
I used to like Josh D as a sophomore but now believe he's a liability--certainly at LT & mayvbe even at LG--and other options need to be considered. The OL recruiting has been strong, so it is up to the coaches to find the answer. Their job is still way too incomplete in determining the best combination for LG & LT-- Let's hope they figure it out before it is too late!

Basically you switch collins then have to switch him back next year then switch him again if he doesnt leave early. The dude is a beast at guard, he pulled and blocked the strong side de on sheps td. Also from radio guys, they think his future in the nfl is at guard.
And i hope none of you think cus he played lt in highschool means he can just start on LSUs line. The oline is one of the biggest learning curves in football. The zone blocking schemes cant be picked up in 1 week.

[quote right now Les is trying to keep as much continuity on the line as possible.

Why?
How in the hell did mett light up the secondary in scrimages is what I want to know...did the dline have to count to 3 mississippi before rushing. Seems like going against a great dline in practice would prepare the oline for any dline they see all year.

Well our best tackle is hurt. You dont think faulk had something to do with the o performing well in practice? Also qbs are no contact.

I know it's no contact for qbs.
I am sure our 2nd string linemen are more talented than most olines I watch every saturday( not talking about top 25 teams) and we seem to not be able to block a 4 man line w/o help from a back. Either we have recruited terribly on the oline or we aren't developing/ coaching these guys well enough. And this isn't new we have struggled in pass protection for years.
Les makes some crazy calls that border on stupid during the game. With that said, the man knows football and O line. He has a reason for leaving Collins at guard--right off I would have to say its for the running game and a percieved better match-up for Bama.
Les needs to get the PENALTIES and Turnovers under control.

This is what I think.
Collins is our best, and most athletic lineman.
We hardly ever throw the damn ball, so if you put him at tackle you don't get as much use from him.
Guards pull, and if you watch La'El, they pull him A LOT.
I think we are the only offense in football that purposely puts their best linemen at guard.
Now of course my theory is complete dogs hit when you consider that Faulk, at this point in time, is better than Collins, and was the LT before injury.

I don't even want to think about how CLM thinks.
The offensive line issue goes deeper than personel. Take a look at several of Metts sacks from Saturday. The blocking was not there. We missed picking up the linebacker on a delayed blitz a couple of times. We used 8 guys to block 6 and still gave up sacks.
Either they aren't being coached or they just don't understand the scheme. Max blocking is gap responsibility. Your first option is the inside man. Watched both gaurds give up inside man to block the late blitzer and missed.
Also the backs are missing blocks aswell. To me its a coaching issue.
Get the offensive line going and the offense numbers will improve.
