Have a quick question about the Bama game I could not figure out. Did not see an explanation posted elsewhere.

In the first half we nearly sacked Hurts for a safety in the endzone but the refs ruled forward progress was made. The next play Hurts dropped back in the pocket, was about to be sacked in the endzone, and threw the ball deep out of bounds. I saw no receiver anywhere close to the direction of the throw.

My question is: why was that throw not considered intentional grounding? I thought Hurts was clearly in the pocket.

Should've been called and thus a safety. They missed it.

I think the ref judged that the throw was so far away from the receiver because the receiver ran the wrong route, Hurts wasn't under that much pressure on that play. Pass was still 10 yards out of bounds with nobody in the vicinity.

for the same reason every other bogus call and non call was made. Did you really have to ask?

sorry for the smartass response. In all honesty the SEC offices are located in Birmingham Alabama and it has been know for a long time that SEC officiating is going to do whatever they can to help Bama (and to some degree Auburn). This has been a known fact for a long time.

The real mindfrick was the IG penalty called on etling when he was clearly hit as he threw the ball

He wasn't on this one. He dropped straight back.

I think he was deemed not being under immediate pressure. It's not intentional grounding unless the passer is facing pressure.

Duke Riley was running right at him to sack him, untouched. He threw it away b/c he saw him coming right at him. I don't give a shite if a receiver ran the wrong route. He threw the ball 15 yards out of bounds. The ball landed 30 yards away from anyone on his team. That was a safety.

are you sure?

earlier this year, Okie St did it on 4th down to drain the clock.
dude took 3 steps and hurled it as far as he could. zero pressure.

intentional grounding was called.

i don't know which way is the correct way according to the rules.

Thanks for the clip. He doesn't get outside of the tackle box. Should have been a safety.

It went passed the line of scrimmage and it does not matter where he threw it.
