if Chavis had stayed, would Haley have still been our DL coach?

I have heard that Chavis and Haley were personal friends and close ones at that. if true, did Chavis screw Haley by leaving? did Miles tell Chavis Haley had to go (as he was tired of finishing second on top DL's) as Stud was let go the year before (also, recruiting failures).

it's easy to see that our defense recruiting has been elevated with the addition of Steele and Coach O. i'm hopeful that our defensive play will be elevated as well. MSU and Auburn running all over us still stings, not to mention the Notre Dame melt down or the (once again) annual last minute loss to Bama.

If I recall, Chavis had encouraged Haley to sign a contract extension before he turned tail in the eve of the ND game.

I read somewhere the other day that Haley and Chavis while friends, often butted heads over what the DL should do. Brick apparently wanted to get more pressure on the QB, but Chavis remained stubborn and as DC always won that battle. I think it was ponamsky that said there was zero chance Brick would follow Chavis to A&M for that reason.

this makes sense. I think Haley will land on his feet, esp if LSU still owes him money and he can be patient looking for a job.

Chavis' style is a reaction and containment like style. it usually works great with certain spread teams but precludes much of the aggressive DL play.

Chavis tried to make sure Haley wouldn't follow him. both sucked and will continue to suck. When has Chavis ever had a defense that overachieved. If our great defenses were great bc of him, they would have been great every year.

Yes

Chavis and Haley are real tight. Haley wasn't going anywhere as long as Chavis wanted him here.

Miles told Haley to go because the best defensive line coach/recruiter in the country was all but saying he wants to be on the LSU staff every Thursday morning on Baton Rouge radio.

Chavis tried to contain. Deny the long plays and make the opponent use 10 plus play drives where with each additional play the offense is more likely to make a mistake and run time of the clock. He liked to blitz corners and nickels because they had high probabilities of not being accounted for by a blocker as his change of pace.

This worked for the most part, but led to frustration many times at the end of the halfs and games when he became even less aggressive. Face it, the 2011 LSU D would have played well in any scheme and to a lesser extent 09,10, and 12.

During the Saban and Pellini years the defense gave up long yardage plays on occasion, but still had ranks in total yards and PPG similar to the Chavis defenses.

Anyway, the Tigers look to be going more aggressive(risk taking) now and it should be fun to watch. No doubt, they will probably give up some long quick TDs because of this but hopefully will more than compensate for that with more TFL, sacks,TOs, and 3 and outs.

Brick is a good guy whose done some quality things away from the football field.

But the guy just absolutely had to go.

Every draft -- from Danielle Hunter to Mingo to Anthony Johnson -- every single draft report over the last 3-4 years rips LSU products in not knowing how to rush the passer and just how bad their technique is.

If it was one, two or three isolated players, OK. But it's everyone.

Then on top of what the Vikings DL coach said about Hunter.

Brick had to go.

We had the #1 defense in the SEC last year. I highly doubt any personnel changes were anticipated on that side of the ball.

No link, but I've heard that Brick had to go after last season, as another poster alluded to. Chavis didn't want Orgeron on staff, which made the decision to not match A&M's offer much easier.

Steele was Miles' first choice for DC because of his willingness to add Orgeron and retain Raymond (per Randy Rosetta and others).

Hell, Chavis told Steele to take the LSU job.

Having such quality DB's helped cover flaws with the rest of the D in most occasions. A&M is about to learn that the hard ways, because they have crap DB's

Are you sure? I think Steele was a last resort. I read somewhere that the contract terms Alleva wanted limited the search

It was reported by nola.com as well that he was the first choice for the reasons listed in your quote.

I think there was some expectation on Brick's part that he would have the chance to follow Chavis.

On one hand, didn't seem like Chavis was thinking that way (TAMU wanted him so bad he could have probably leveraged that, except for the fact that TAMU's DL coach was brand new). So, with Chavis encouraging Brick to sign that extension this may have been in the works with TAMU for longer than we know.

On the other hand, seems like CLM and Alleva saw that Brick did want to go with him. Just an impression I get. Therefore, with the assumption (on CLM's part) that Brick was no longer "all in" it was time for him to go. They didn't want to screw him; but at same time it had to work out with coaching limits and get Coach O on board after Brick left (for Texas).

I kind of get the feeling Brick slacked off, sort of like Studwra. Pretty good coach; not a bad recruiter historically. But the last few years compared to previous- slacked off is about right.

I've seen this mentioned a couple of times now. What did the coach say about Hunter, is there a link?

Brick had to go.

The LSU D-Line has been a strength for years. Brick had a big part of that. To completely disregard those achievements is wrong. Brick is a very good DL coach.

Last year was just a matter of not having deep talent at those positions as we have had in the past coupled with the fact that the offense sputtered all year, keeping the few SEC-quality D-Lineman on the roster on the field longer.
