Question about College Wrestling, and having it at LSU.

Has it ever been considered? What is the feasibility of it happening?
Add a female sport to balance it out for Title 9 purposes. With the amount of great high school wrestling programs in the state, why not?
It would be really cool if an athlete, like Daniel Cormier, an olympian from Lafayette fighting for a UFC light heavyweight title, were representing LSU, instead of Oklahoma State.
It would be a win-win. More opportunities for athletes from Louisiana, and more publicity for the university. Just throwing it out there.

They used to have it and was discontinued, I think around the late 80s? I am younger, but my first guess is Title XI influenced discontinuing the program
I would imagine we would add men's soccer as it's more popular than wrestling in Louisiana, and it could pay for itself better.
I will say (and not accusing you of it) that the overwhelming popularity of adding another sport to LSU while simultaneously bitching about ticket prices is epic. Because the university needs the LSU AD to keep it afloat (Thank you, Jindal and our 300+ colleges in LA), it's simply not feasible for LSU to make a profit while adding 2 more sports.
Personally, I would love for LSU to discontinue its swimming program and add two sports to replace the two programs. Both teams are shite up a creek, and our facility is probably the worst of any Power 5 team.

I'd much rather LSU have a men's soccer team or even a lacrosse team before a wrestling team.

Truth is, there really aren't that many "great" high school wrestling programs in the state. Not compared to a state like Oklahoma.

LSU used to have a Top Ten wrestling program in the 70's under Coach "Schack", the original "Schack" at LSU. (Larry S????????o)

True, but there's a lot of talent, and without collegiate support, it's on an island down here without a great network of collegiate level coaching support. Wrestling is a sport that has a smaller following, but a lot more passion, and definitely boosts a college's tough guy image. A program at LSU would quickly draw the majority of SEC talent and with the right coaching staff, I believe, could very quickly become competitive

LSU had one of the best programs in the nation and I remember what happened was it was not supported by the SEC.

LSU had a top ranked wrestling team I the 80's. It was scrapped because of Title 9. John Tenta(aka Earthquake) wrestled super heavyweight.

Yep....George Atiyeh played DT at LSU (77-80), was 2-time All SEC in football and was also the SEC heavyweight wresting champion. His brother Joe was a 2-time All American who won a silver medal (for Syria) at the '84 Olympics.

Used to have tripleheaders in the PMAC, women bball at 4:45, men bball at 7:30, and wrestling afterwards.

Better off putting the resources toward Football and basketball. The SEC doesn't support it and professional wrestling is where it is at.

LSU recruits nationally, plus with talent coming from the big wrestling schools in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette they would have no problem putting together a quality team to complete...

Title IX killed wrestling and men's gymnastics. With the implementation of Title IX some non revenue sports for men were axed to fund new programs for women. It was less about the SEC.

I am sick of hearing this argument. The LSU Athletic Department is going to be bringing in an extra $20 million thanks to the SEC Network.
We just need to wait until the Power 5 conferences vote on having football scholarships not count against Title IX. Then we can get our Men's Rugby, Wrestling, Soccer, etc. Teams.

True. My roommate my freshman year at Power was on the wrestling team.Wrestling counted in the standings for the Bernie Moore troply. LSU, Tennessee,Auburn and Alabama had good teams and there were a few others. But it got dropped with men's gymnastics in the mid80's or so. If I'm not mistaken the men's gymnastics team was pretty good, too.

LSU had a good program but was cut due to budget after title IX.
