QB Observations Spring 2017

Ive posted here a few times concerning what Ive seen over the course of the spring. My nephew is a current recruit, and we have been present at multiple practices, as well as watched all except two scrimmages.
DURING PRACTICES
Etling - seemed to have a strong command of the offense. He had up and down days. Threw the ball well and moved well outside of the pocket. Took most of the reps in every practice at I saw and 100% of 1st team reps.
Mcmillan - struggled early in the spring, and got better as spring moved on. I did not see him being used a Dual Threat as has been reported. Rep count was quite low.
Scott - little to no practice reps. When i did see him, no Dual Threats plays being run. Same package as DE.
Narcisse - little to no practice reps. Running same offense as DE. A few practices where he nor scott took a single snap.
Rep count is important. Increases reps = increased confidence. They all are capable.
SCRIMMAGES
Etling - played consistent throughout spring. I left impresseed with his decision making on more than one occassion. Stats reported seemed to unfairly paint the wrong picture, and at times were just inaccurate.
Mcmillan - showed flashes. Live arm. Was accurate (for the most part). Had some issues with ball security on rb exchange. Was impressed with his athleticm. Interestingly, i only saw him run zone read twice. Once during practice, then again last night. I saw very little plays that were designed to use his legs. He was in the spread more than Etling, but mostly passing and handing the ball off.
Scott - actually threw TDs in two scrimmages that were never reported in his stats. Actually had a few completions in the last scrimmage that were odly, unreported. Dont think he ever repped more than a series or two.
Narcisse - has struggled to pick up the offense and operate under center. Strong arm. Knees seemed to bother him early in the spring. Dont think he ever repped more than a series or two.
OVERALL
This has not been a competition from the start. Etling has out repped Mcmillan 3:1 through practices and scrimmages. Scott and Narcisse were never seriously in contention. I was at a few practices where the two did not take a single snap. The goal has seemed to be getting etling up to speed (JM to a lesser degree) before any back surgery.
The younger QBs seemed to be heading twds redshirts/holdovers to 2018. I have not seen anything that resembles a QB battle. I have been mostly surprised that i did not see offenses that were truly tailored for DTQBs.
SPRING GAME
Not much to say. The offense was the most scaled back that I saw all spring. Meanwhile, the defense blizted unmercifully. Ive seen Coach O stop at least one scrimmage in response to the offense embarrassing the D. My feel from yesterday? "Offensive Song and Dance". Etling is your QB. Mcmillan is your backup. There is no QB battle.
Until next spring. GEAUX TIGERS

So our QB is only good in practices and scrimmages. Yay!

The kid has earned every benefit of the doubt. Etling actually wanted to have back surgery b4 the spring game. Ill reserve judgments post surgery and into fall 2017

I knew this wasn't going to be a true QB competition. You can't call it an open QB competition and not give all the guys somewhat of the same reps/opportunity to work with the 1st team offense.
Fans have been so use to hearing BS come from Les Miles when it come down to the QBs that they will believe anything that is fed to them that sounds promising at this point.

Limited practices I don't think you can afford to split reps

I understand that... if you already have your clear cut guy as the QB. Its the spring, not the fall. If you say its a competition, then give everybody the same opportunity. Dont say the position is open when Etling is taking 98% of the 1st team reps.

Thats why they call it spring. If guys are not really repping, why feed the QB battle headlines.

Etling not being where we want doesn't mean the others are strong enough to push him. I get your point, but coaches have to make that call

I know he is skinny and might have to redshirt but the day is coming
Even he will need reps.

It's 15 practice to go from no offense to Canada's offense
In my opinion. Every position is open every day. I think that is the right tone

Does "every" include guice?
Every position is not open everday. This one is not. Im ok with that. There is no battle. Just keep it real. The "tone" is different from reality. Its Etlings job. Period.

when installing a completely different offense, it makes sense to me to give the returning starter the reps.
Maybe in he Fall, it will be split differently.

Based on What? That makes no sense if there is suppose to be an "open battle" for the starting QB position.

The truth of the matter is that Etling is not a good QB. Never was. Never will be. No matter how much he knows the offense.

QB position will not improve. Overall, strong O line and running game will help.

I'd like to hear an observation on the WRs. So much about the QB if it has been mentioned it's drowned out...
How are the WRs faring as far as creating separation?
Last couple of years they seemed to have struggled somewhat with that, especially off the line. I suspect that may be affecting the QB play (along with pressure, DBU, and upcoming surgeries).

so if our QB has no pressure he looks good

This sounds discouraging. You would think Canada would try to get reps in for all the quarterbacks.
If this is true, it makes you wonder if Brennan would have been wasting his time if he would have been an early entry player.

I liked the way the LSU Tiger 2017 College Football team looked in the abbreviated LSU Spring game. Cut short in the second quarter by lighting and rain stopping the game with 3:00 minutes to play.
Big strong and fast with plenty of them. Making this LSU football team look like that Head coach Ed Orgeron has a lot of talented deep college football players everywhere I looked.
Danny Etling still looks limited in his QB ability and not as good as I would want, but his backup Justin McMillan was more mobile and had a better-looking passing arm to me. And another good passing QB is coming aboard in the fall in Myles Brennan that is giving me hope LSU can improve in the Quarterback position also.
