I found this old article that previewed the 1969 team, which was arguably one of the best teams to not make it as #1. There were a lot of questions then, just as there are now:

The only reason this team didn't win the National Championship was because they couldn't tackle Archie Manning. I was 11 years old and in my 4th year as a season ticket holder.

Absolutely indicative of a writer that glosses over things and misses the real story. The article has zero (count them- zero) mentions of one of the most gifted and dominant players ever fielded by the Tigers- namely Tommy Casanova. Especially since Cholly Mac was singing his praises from the rooftops and saying he was one of the best athletes he had ever seen. So much for the usefulness of preseason articles from the all-knowing press.

Cholly Mac's best team often forgot about when Tiger fans start talking about our great teams

Shows just how unhelpful and often uninformed the media was and likely still is.
What current All-American are they forgetting to mention?

That was statistically the best defense against the rush that LSU ever put in the field. The guys allowed something like 43 yds a game. Pretty sick

That was a bitter defeat and we lead late in the game but Manning lead them back if I recall.
The other thing that happened was Notre Dame's decision to end it's tradition of not playing in bowl games. Had they not entered the bowl picture LSU would have faced #1 Texas in the Cotton. That was a great LSU run defense but who knows if they could have stopped the wishbone since Mac's teams did fair very against it.

I'm a little older than you (not much) and couldn't agree more with this. That team was great. A lot of young shits don't know about Ole Miss and Arky from the 50's and 60's. That '66 Cotton Bowl is probably Top 3 LSU Victories on my list. When the defense mashed Brittenum, I knew we had it with the way we were playing.

This is 1968 preview not 69. QB in 69 was Mike Hillman who isn't even mentioned in 68 . No mention of Casanova either .

Look at it this way...if we were playing by today's standards, LSU would have squared off against Tennessee in the SEC title game, each were the only teams with one loss in SEC play.

And I think that team whips the Vols and who knows.

But yeah that wasn't the case back then and Archie ruined what could have been a perfect season.

If this was 1968, Casanova would have only been coming into his first year of varsity sports. To mention him as being outstanding on a freshman team which only played 4 games per year and seldom was beaten would not have been newsworthy yet. Very few people ever went to watch the freshmen team play. I went a couple of times in Casanova's freshman season 1967, because a former teammate was on the freshman team. At that time Casanova was a running back.

In 68 he was a true freshman--Ineligible for varsity sports.

Correct. With Freddie Haynes as QB.

The first game was against reigning Cotton Bowl champions (they beat Bear Bryant's Alabama team in that game)Texas A&M. That was the first LSU game I ever attended and I haven't been right since. Oh yeah. We won.

This article was about the '68 team--- Casanova was a freshman and ineligible for varsity play.

Casanova was more of a late bloomer. He wasn't as highly sought after while in high school.

with unreliable telegraph lines, and wildcat strikes by the Pony Express, information wasn't as readily available back then

You are right I typed 1967 but meant 1968. Was off by a year
. The point remains he had never played varsity prior to that review that the OP referred.
